Caitlin's Corner
During lunch on December 21st one student exclaimed, "Wow this tastes like pumpkin pie!" Another exclaimed "I loved it!"
Can you imagine that students were talking about a dish made with brown rice, squash, yams, cranberries and apples? Students had the opportunity to taste our Sassy Squash Rice creation to celebrate our December Harvest of the Month, Winter Squash.
The sass came from these gourds known for their long storage capabilities (up to six months!), bounty of vitamin A and C as well as healthy carbohydrates. Did you know a pumpkin is a winter squash just like Butternut, Spaghetti, and Acorn squash? The results from the cafeteria taste test were: 48 Tried It, 24 Liked It, 58 Loved It. Parents I need your help!
Taste tests are a great way to encourage our students to try new things and become courageous eaters. I am looking for parents that would be willing to help pass out samples during our January carrot taste test during lunch. Additionally, I am in search of adventurous chefs or cooks that would willing to help plan and cook a tasty dish for February Harvest of the Month, beets.
Happy Eating, Families!
Sincerely,
Caitlin the Foodcorps Service Member
