A Message from the Leadership Team
Adult Education
We are excited to announce that the Golden Gate Learning Center (GGLC), a portable on the campus of Golden Gate Middle School, is accepting day-time registrations (M-F; 8:30 am – 11:30 am) for ESOL class. If you know of a potential student, please have them call Rosmeri for registration information and availability. They may also visit the site and speak directly with Diana Kerskie the GGLC instructor. Registration for our evening sites has come to a close and we now turn our full attention to instruction, retention, Casas preparation and performance. It takes the entire team at each site, instructors, support staff and coordinators, working together to ensure that we are successful.
Over the course of the next several days, we will be meeting with coordinators and support staff to discuss Fall Semester’s Casas results. Moving forward, we will take what we learned from Fall Semester and work toward continuous improvements.
There have been a lot of great classroom visits these last couple of weeks. The students are enthusiastic and the instruction is engaging! We have “walked-in” and witnessed high-energy instruction that has been curriculum based. Many of you have embraced the “chunking” and are following the pacing-guide as intended. If you have questions or need some assistance with the pacing guide/activities PLEASE reach-out to Christine; she will give you a quick refresher next time she is at your site. Remember the “chunking” and the pacing-guide are meant to make planning easier and to assist teachers who co-teach. As always thanks for all you do.
Rosmeri will be out of the office from Jan. 27 - Feb. 6. Please assist us with substitution needs by first working with your coordinator for planned absences and by giving us as much notice as you can for those unplanned illnesses. While Rosmeri is out please call 377-1016 (before 4:00 pm) and email Bruce rutilb@collierschools.com and Ariel pechokar@collierschools.com for emergency sub needs after 4:00 p.m.
Community Education
We will be sending out an email to ask you to submit your teaching schedule desires for Spring and Summer. The Spring Session will be April 18 - May 25 and Summer Session will be June 12 - July 21. Remember to send us the day(s) and time(s) you want to teach and if there are any "tweaks" to your course description for the ACE Class Schedule catalog. Any questions, call Belynda at 239-377-2399.

We often use the word Residency as a way to describe a person's immigration status in the United States. Florida Residency for Tuition Purposes is VERY different! This has to do with the documents that are required to demonstrate that a person has lived in FLORIDA for at least one year to be eligible for the discounted Florida In-State Tuition at Public Colleges and Universities. It's important to know that these documents must be valid for at least one year. If you plan on attending a state college or university, please check with me about these complicated rules.
ESOL Teacher Resources
General Reading Strategies:
1. When asking a question, allow enough "think time" for students to generate an answer.
2. When students are "following" along as you read out loud, randomly stop in different places requiring the studnets to chorally complete the sentence.
3. Before students read, select key words to discuss.
4. When reading an informational passage, use the 3-2-1 strategy to measure student engagement. Write 3 things they learned, 2 interesting things, and 1 question.
