APRIL IS DIVERSITY MONTH
April is diversity month. We will be featuring inspiring diverse people on the screen in the Commons before school and during lunch.
Maggie Gee
Maggie was one of only two Chinese-American women to fly with the Women’s Airforce Service Pilots during WWII. When the U.S. entered the war, Maggie dropped out of college to become a draftsperson for engineers working on Navy ships. However, Amelia Earhart was her hero. She decided to save $800 and go to pilot school in Nevada.
Women’s Airforce Service Pilots
The Women’s Airforce Service Pilots were founded on August 5, 1943. WASP consisted of about 1,100 civilian women who were trained pilots who tested aircraft, transported aircraft, and trained other pilots. They were not allowed to fly combat missions. Nancy Harkness Love and Jackie Cochran were the first two female pilots to propose the idea of using women for non-combat missions. As the war heated up, and male pilots were busy fighting, the military adopted Love and Cochran’s idea.
NEWS FROM THE LIBRARY
During the month of April, we are going to have our first ever Ebook Reading Challenge. In order to win, students may read any Ebook of their choice. Ebooks can be easily checked out through the Monroe School District Digital Library or Sno-Isle Library. If you have any questions, please contact Mr. Keith in the library.Dear Park Place Middle School families,
The Human Growth and Development unit starts the first week of May. Students will learn information, as required by law, about the risks of sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV and AIDS.
By law, parents must attest to reviewing this content before they can excuse their child from HIV prevention education. If you wish to opt your student out of the HIV & AIDS lessons and/or the human growth and sexuality lessons, please complete and submit the Exclusion Request form that is found on our district website: Health and Sexual Health Education - Monroe School District. The opt out/exclusion form must be submitted on a yearly basis.
Even if you choose not to have your child participate in this learning program, recognize that students tend to talk about this content with one another, and your child will likely receive second-hand information from their peers. Previewing the curriculum in advance will help you respond to any questions your child may have.
Please let us know if you have any questions.
Sincerely,
Kristie Hilson, Principal
Joel Garrison, Assistant Principal
Amy Adamski, Assistant Principal
