Weekly Happenings at Southeastern Elementary
Principal's Postings
Welcome to the January 10, 2019, edition of Southeastern Scene.
Dear Southeastern Families:
Kindergarten teacher Katie Norton and Assistant Principal Niki Monkul are excited to offer a book study to SES families. It is an opportunity to come together with staff members, families, and community members to read the book, "Becoming Brilliant," while discussing important topics around today's children and teens. Below you will find the publisher's summary of the book:
In just a few years, today's children and teens will forge careers that look nothing like those that were available to their parents or grandparents. While the US economy becomes ever more information-driven, our system of education seems stuck on the idea that "content is king," neglecting other skills that 21st century citizens sorely need.
Becoming Brilliant offers solutions that parents can implement right now. Backed by the latest scientific evidence, this book introduces the "6Cs:" collaboration, communication, content, critical thinking, creative innovation, and confidence, along with ways parents can nurture their children's development in each area.
Our time together will be focused on discussions around these important topics. Additional information is included in the flyer below. Be sure to RSVP!
Yours in education,
Mrs. Chastain

Counselor's Corner
Body Safety Curriculum the week of January 20th.
As a community, we must think of childhood sexual abuse as a preventable disease. Collaboration between educators, parents and guardians, child advocates, the medical community, law enforcement and our communities-at-large can proactively protect our children before abuse ever happens. The Indiana Center for the Prevention of Youth Abuse and Suicide (ICPYAS, formerly Chaucie’s Place) will be visiting our school the week of January 20th to participate in this collaborative effort. Their body safety curriculum, Child Lures/Teen Lures Prevention, Think First & Stay Safe, will be presented to our students, providing relevant, balanced and proven prevention strategies to families and children, and increasing awareness and knowledge of how to recognize, interrupt, stop and prevent these crimes. There will not be “in person” parent information nights this year. However, there are online resources for you to view. A parent resource video can be found at www.indianaprevention.org and then selecting the “Our Programs” tab at the top right hand of the page. Parent Guides will be distributed to students the week of the presentation. These will be a great resource for facilitating conversations at home. You can also call the ICPYAS office at 317-759-8008 with any specific programming questions not answered in the online parent resources. If you would like to opt your child out of this presentation, please stop by the SES office to fill out the opt out form.
