Dr. Jones is a Professor of Psychology at Virginia Tech University, and a Clinical Psychologist who specializes in clinical child and adult psychology, trauma psychology, and issues related to disaster and terrorism (www.firetrauma.com).
His research concerns the topic of childhood stress and coping, coping with common stressful life events as well as major traumas. Disaster Preparedness and Post-traumatic stress disorder, Depression, Post Traumatic Growth, and Traumatic Brain Injury are major areas of study.
Co-editor of Behavior Therapy and Black Populations: Psychosocial Issues and Empirical Findings, Dr. Jones has also served as a member of numerous editorial boards and published extensively in the domain of child and adult trauma.
He was deployed as the team leader for a group of mental health consultants assigned to Gulf Port Mississippi and subsequently participated in a briefing targeting children’s reactions to Hurricanes Katrina and Rita with First Lady Laura Bush in New Orleans. He later visited the White House to discuss related issues with her Assistant Deputy Director of Special Projects. He is a member of the Hurricane Katrina Community Advisory Group administered by the Department of Health Care Policy at the Harvard Medical School where several published papers documenting the impact of the storms on children, adolescents, and adults were produced. He also served as a member of the Safe and Drug-Free Schools and Communities Advisory Committee designed to provide advice to Secretary Margaret Spellings at the Department of Education. More recently he and his students at the Stress and Coping Lab have been engaged in a program of research investigating the mental health impact of the April 16th shootings at Virginia Tech.Dr. Jones received his Ph.D. from Penn State University and completed his clinical internship at Brown University. He also held a secondary appointment at the Western Psychiatric Institute at the University of Pittsburg, the Child Study Center at Yale University, and currently holds this position at the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine and Research Institute. He also serves as a member of the American Psychological Association’s Guideline Development Panel for the Treatment of PTSD. Additionally, he was recently asked to serve as a member of the Global Forum on Urban and Regional Resilience at Virginia Tech. He currently serves as the Director and Founder of Recovery Efforts After Adult and Child Trauma (R.E.A.A.C.T).
He has appeared on CBS News, CBC News, BBC, PBS, C-Span, Fox News and a host of other media outlets including print, radio and the web. He was also featured on the Dr. OZ show discussing the impact of the shootings in Newtown Conn., as well as ways of coping with it.
