Monday Matters
Week of Aug. 28-Sept. 1
Hi TJE Family!
It has been a great start to the school year. I hope you have heard about some of the exciting things your students have been doing in their classes. Likewise, I hope they have adjusted well and are making new friends.
As we begin the school year, I want to talk about the importance of arriving to school on time. On time means your student is in their seat and ready to begin instruction at 8:00 a.m. If you are dropping off at 8:00, your student is late and will receive a tardy slip. In the state of Texas, we have a 90% attendance rule: The Texas attendance rules say that a student has to be in a class at least 90% of the time if they want to be sure to get credit for that class. This rule applies even if your child has an Individualized Education Program (IEP) or Section 504 plan.
If your student needs to eat breakfast, they should arrive in time to finish breakfast and make it to class by 8:00 a.m. Students feel good and are more productive and successful when they are at school and on time. Let's set them up for success.
I hope by now, everyone is familiar with our dismissal locations. We have dismissal information and maps that are kept in Monday Matters, so fill free to take a look and share with anyone who may be on the pick up list for your student.
Educating our students require team work between home and school. We look forward to building and growing relationships that will benefit our students. We appreciate all you do to send us some of the best and brightest students in MISD.
Respectfully,
Mico Rhines -Principal

Dot Day- September 15th
We Are Celebrating International Dot Day Friday, September 15th!!!
I am very excited to announce that we are going to celebrate International Dot Day here at TJE. On Friday, September 15th during enrichment time, we will be reading the book The Dot by Peter H. Reynolds. We will then be playing games with dots in the gym and be creating dot masterpieces. This should be a fun day intended to spark creativity in our students. I am asking that our students come to school dressed in as many dots as they can on that Friday. Please remember to bring tennis shoes for gym. If you have never heard of Dot Day check it out on the internet. This simple idea has sparked creativity across the world. I look forward to sharing this day with your students. Thanks. Mrs. Allen
A Message From Nurse Spence
From Your School Nurse
Welcome back to school. We have started the school year out with a bang, already seeing cases of COVID, Strep and Flu. YOU, our wonderful parents, are our first line of defense to keep our school healthy. With COVID cases we are seeing low grade fever, body aches and fatigue. If your child is ill, please keep them at home.
We follow the Texas Department of State Health Services policies on excluding sick students from school.
· For COVID positives, the policy states that we exclude students from school for 5 days from the start of symptoms.
· Students with a temperature of 100.0 or greater must remain out of school until fever free for 24 hours without the use of fever reducing medications.
· If your student is vomiting or has diarrhea, they are excluded from school until they are free of symptoms for 24 hours.
The school clinic phone number is 817-299-6950. It is my suggestion that you save that number to your phone so that you do not mistake it for Spam or a telemarketer call when the nurse calls you about your child.
We do offer telehealth through Goodside Health in the school clinic this year. If the nurse feels it could benefit the student and family, she will call the parents to ask if they would like a telehealth visit. If the student is already registered for Goodside Health, then the parent will receive a link via text message to be included in the video visit (parents must be present to do a telehealth visit). A provider will see the student via video chat and can order a strep, COVID or flu test that your school nurse can administer on site. The school nurse also has medications in the clinic that the provider can order for the student. If a prescription is needed, they will call it in to your pharmacy. Families will be billed through their insurance, or for those without insurance, Goodside Health offers a low cash pay rate to ensure accessibility for all. Visit www.goodsidehealth.com/billing-inquiries/ for billing questions.
Registering for SchoolMed is easy! Sign-up online at gsh.co/register
Accidents happen at all grade levels and sometimes we need a change of clothes. Please always have a complete extra set of clothes in your child’s backpack. We hate to disturb your workday to bring your child a change of clothes because they spilled sticky syrup all over themselves!
Welcome Back!

Party invitations will only be passed out to the whole class or for girl/boy specific parties. Our goal is to never make students feel excluded. This is our practice at Thelma Jones. If you have any questions please don't hesitate to reach out to Mrs. Rhines.
You may send treat bags for your student's birthday. Treat bags will be passed out at the end of the day and sent home with students. Ideas for treat bags include: stickers, pencils, small party favors, and wrapped candy. You may not bring food for your student's birthday. Things like cupcakes and cookies will not be accepted.
When having lunch with your student, please be mindful that you may only eat with your student in the designated area. I know it's nice to meet your child's friends, but we are not allowed to put other students in your care without parent permission. Once lunch is over, you will need to checkout in the front.
