First UMC Sealy Digest

A look at happenings at First United Methodist Church Sealy

This Sunday, May 22: Trinity Sunday Services at 8 & 10 am and Mission Sunday!

The first Sunday after Pentecost is always Trinity Sunday: the celebration of God’s three-in-one nature and action on creation’s behalf. Because of the Trinity, we receive God’s loving care as a parent, as Jesus the Savior, and through the empowering presence of the Holy Spirit. The Trinity is an affirmation of teamwork – One in Three and Three in One.

While we baptize "in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit," most of our worship and preaching are emptied of all trinitarian content and the deep mystery of the Trinity. We cannot resolve the issue here, but the point can be made: People are starving, not for doctrinal correctness, but for life in communion with the triune God. We need the subversive presence of the triune God who defeats and break the chains of the strong enslaving the weak. The whole people of God are yearning to be encountered by the God who gives up the idea of God (Philippians 2:5-11) and becomes incarnate in the demands and struggles of daily life. We long for this God. Baptized into this faith, we are born to proclaim before the world the God who by the power of the Spirit animates Christian life in the name of Jesus Christ.

Sunday is Mission Sunday at First UMC. Join us as we assemble more Flood Buckets: cleaning buckets to be used in disaster recovery and relief projects. The buckets will be assembled by First Families, then shipped to United Methodist Committee on Relief

(UMCOR) for distribution as needed.

This month, our goal is to collect and deliver 130 pounds of sugar to the Sealy Christian Food Pantry. Bring all you can! Donation boxes are in the Narthex and Church Offices.

We’ll celebrate graduating seniors, Kaiton Theriot and TJ Theriot, during the May 29, 10 am worship service. Cindy Theriot is proud grandmother to both. Please make plans to attend this special service.
