Jags are on the Move!
Dear Jag Families, We have been moving fast and furiously to start the year. This short week alone has been filled with students connecting with clubs, students taking ownership of their learning, and lots of smiling faces. Thank you for supporting our JAGS in Volleyball and Football. Open House is tonight so don’t miss an opportunity to meet and greet your child’s teachers and administrators. Tomorrow, September 6th is Fall Picture Day, so make sure your child is looking his or her best for the photo. Don't forget to take some time out this week to remember the victims of 9-11 and the heroes who gave their lives to save others.
Please join us next week for our first Spirit Week. Each day we will dress up to show our support for National Childhood Cancer Awareness! I would like to invite you to join us on Wednesday, September 11, 2019, for our first PTO meeting of the year. Student Spotlight
Our student of the week is 8th grader, Alexander Song! He was just recently voted as our 2019-2020 National Junior Honor Society president and is a member of the Sartartia Orchestra. He is an excellent student that challenges himself in the classroom and beyond.
He exhibits the skills of a servant leader in the way he interacts with students and teachers in class and around campus. Alexander continues to serve and lead as a Boy Scout and also volunteers for various causes in his community.
Staff Spotlight
Ms. Rosar has been in education for 14 years and currently teaches 7th Grade Science. She has also coached volleyball, basketball and soccer at SMS for the last four years. She is a dedicated teacher, department head, and mom. Ms. Rosar has three kids: one in college, one in 4th grade and one in 6th grade. They are her whole world! Growing up, Ms. Rosar always knew that she wanted to be a teacher and she used to create classrooms where she could teach her stuffed animals at home. She is also continuing her passion for education by pursuing her graduate degree at Texas A&M University. Whoop!
Parents--Please complete the beginning of the year Online Forms
Currently, 868 out of 1298 Online Verification forms have been completed by our parents. We still need 430 forms signed to reach 100%. Thank you for completing the verification forms.
To avoid having to use a forest of paper to print forms for parents to complete on the first day of school, parents may complete this annual task starting July 30. See below for details.
- Verify your child(ren)'s information in Skyward Family Access
- Download this helpful flyer (in English and Spanish) to guide you through the process
- To start the verification process, click here to go to Skyward Family Access
- NOTE 1: Please allow your children "Full Access" (FA) to district computers and the network. In order to conduct research, create projects, take certain assessments, use Schoology, use their district email account, and more, students must have full access to the district's resources
- NOTE 2: Please provide permission for your child(ren) to take surveys. As we seek to hear and listen to students' voices and opinions to make SLMS a better place to work and learn, we cannot do that if students do not have permission to take surveys. We don't do many of them, but the ones we do are important, and they originate from within the district
We appreciate all you do to make us an excellent world-class school! Please forward all questions about SKYWARD Family Access to our Data Entry Clerk, Ms. Hodson at 281-634-6323 or email michelon.hodson@fortbendisd.com
Counselors' Corner
Hey Jag Parents!
We are so excited about the start of our 2019-2020 school year!! We have BIG plans for this year: exciting new programs and learning opportunities for you and your child to help you navigate through their middle school years. We hope to see you at parent nights and other learning opportunities that we are offering this year. Be on the lookout for dates/times in the parent newsletters and at Open House this week. Below we have included some of the things that are coming up so that you are aware:
Level Changes
We will start to process level changes on Monday, September 9th. If your child would like to change their level from Pre-AP to Academic or vise versa, please send them to the students center to pick up a level change form. Please know that there are many steps to this form and the form will need to be completed before any level change is processed. A few things to note ** A conference between teacher/parent will need to happen before any level change is processed **Level changed will not be granted if a child has a 75 or above in the course, per district policy that is provided for you on the back of the form.
If you have any questions or concerns, please email your grade level counselor.
Be an SMS Mentor
We are looking for adults in our community to volunteer their time mentoring Sartartia students. We will be accepting new mentors this year at SMS until Friday, September 27, 2019. Students who are in need of a reliable, comforting person to help guide them, will be selected by staff referral. The mandatory district orientation (MUST have every 3 years) is: Wed, September 18, 2019 9:30 AM – 11:00 AM at the Fort Bend ISD Administration Building
If you have any questions regarding the application process, please reach out to: VIPS@fortbendisd.com or katherine.friedel@fortbenisd.com if you are interested in volunteering.
Turn it GOLD week - Sept 9-13
September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month and GOLD is the official awareness ribbon color. GOLD is a precious metal and a reminder that our children are more precious than GOLD. This is our time to honor children and families affected by the disease and rally support for ground-breaking research that can save our kids' lives. Let's show our support and spread awareness by participating in "Turn It Gold" Week!! Beginning on Sept 9th, we will have a week of themed dress-up days. See our attached flyer for details.
WILL YOU GO GOLD WITH US?
September was proclaimed National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month in 2012 to bring awareness to pediatric cancer. FBISD will "Turn it Gold" September 9th - September 13th. SMS will have a "GOLD OUT" day September 13th. Read the attached parent letter for more details.

Front Office Procedures
Due to the vestibule in the front office, it is important to note the following for our check-in process. Everyone who intends to enter the building past the sign-in window during the school day, must have state issued identification to do so. We rely on the RAPTOR scan system for badging visitors in and it only reads state issued ID cards or driver’s licenses. Each visitor will be given a yellow badge to wear throughout the duration of the visit.
All deliveries including homework, clothes, and lunches, etc... must be delivered by 11:00 AM due to the drop-off cart being moved to a different location for student access.
Lunch drop off : please make sure that all lunches are delivered by 11:00 AM so that we may roll the cart into an area that students can access. It is also requested that parents minimize lunch drop off to special occasions.
