Note From Kylie
Greetings! August 2021 was All About Fairs. The Thayer Co. Fair started with its first contest on August 4 and concluded with fair clean up on August 15. State Fair project collection and set up started August 24, and we had Thayer and Nuckolls exhibitors compete in nearly every static category as well as six different animal species (horse, beef, goat, sheep, rabbit and poultry). I was the assistant poultry superintendent, the co-superintendent for FilmFest Contest, and the co-superintendent for the state public speaking contest exhibitions at the 2021 Nebraska State Fair.
We're looking forward to school enrichment for Fall 2021, and we have a variety of workshops in the works (including a Culinary Challenge/Favorite Food Review how-to workshop and a small animal showmanship workshop). Thayer Co. is also hosting the 2021 Area 6 FFA Range Judging Contest, so Southern Plains Extension is working with our ag education partners in the Little Blue NRD and the NRCS-Hebron office to facilitate a successful contest for 40+ FFA chapters on September 14. I am excited for the educational opportunities coming up this fall, and hope you can attend/compete in them as you are able.

SELECTED FAIR HIGHLIGHTS
Thayer Co. Quilt of Valor presented to Veteran Joseph Hansen of Deshler on August 11
Each year, 4-Hers are invited to complete a Quilt of Valor as a Community Service Project. In 2021, with the help of Emeritus Extension Educator Phyliss Schoenholz and volunteers from SouthCentral Peacemakers, 6 quilts were completed at the all-day workshop held in June. Quilters Phyliss Schoenholz, Barb Blinko, and Cindy Bartels donated their quilting services, and others donated their time helping youth and binding. Volunteers sat with the youth during this all-day workshop and assisted them in completing their projects. The youth that were involved this year were: Delainey Mumm, Jocelyn Mumm, AnnaMae Howe, Aliecia Howe, Laiden Heinrichs, and Klarissa Wenske. The Quilt was presented to veteran Joseph Hansen on Wed. August. 11 during 4-H Night.
