Tuesday, June 28: Happy Mind Happy Life
Would you like to feel happier? Happiness can often feel out of reach, but whatever our situation, there are practical everyday skills we can learn to feel happier. Dr. Rangan Chatterjee is a leading medical doctor and expert in lifestyle medicine. He has helped thousands of people to boost their health and wellbeing. At this special event, he'll explain how you can let go of "junk happiness" and develop more "core happiness" on a daily basis. Whether you're at a crisis point or simply want to experience more joy, Rangan's insights will help you feel calmer, more confident and better able to live your life to the full. June marks Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month!
An estimated 50 million people worldwide suffer from Alzheimer's or other dementias. Clinical Assistant Professor of Geriatric Medicine Dr. Gina Fujikami is a purple ambassador for The Longest Day to raise funds and awareness for the care, support and research efforts of the Alzheimer’s Association. Please visit her page if you would like to support these efforts.
The University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa Department of Public Safety will host workshops for emergency and disaster situations.
This summer DPS will provide the free workshops as it often does. The recent attacks has raised awareness and has increased the number of requests for training.
Here are a few of the workshops available:
- Active Shooter Awareness & Response (75 min): This workshop provides information on various active shooter scenarios, what you can do to keep yourself safe, and what to expect when police and DPS respond. This training uses concepts from the Department of Homeland Security’s Run-Hide-Fight program.
- Hurricane Preparedness (75 min): Hurricane season started on June 1. Learn about how to prepare for a hurricane in Hawaii, including tips for preparing an emergency kit, what to do when a hurricane is approaching, and how to find a local shelter or shelter-in-place.
- Conflict Resolution and De-escalation (75 minutes): Learn about precipitating factors to conflict, signs of agitation, and discuss verbal and nonverbal de-escalation techniques. In addition, DPS discusses how to end the de-escalation process, and what to do when de-escalation isn’t possible. This session is recommended for faculty and staff.

In partnership with Pu’ulu Lapa’au and Hawaii Pacific Health, HAH and HHERF are proud to present this 3-part webinar series, The Science of Compassion.
At its heart, clinical medicine involves interacting with other humans, often in the context of suffering. Our interactions can take many forms. We may get the job done, but how we view others and interact with them throughout the process can vary greatly between each of us. Do we see patients and colleagues as problems to be solved, or people we have little in common with? Or do we see them with affection and a sense of affinity?
This question is fundamental because the view we take can have a profound impact on our own well-being. This has been understood for millennia within Eastern spiritual traditions, and more recently validated through extensive cognitive science research on compassion. The science is clear - when we are able to cultivate strong feeling of positive connection with others we buffer ourselves against stress, depression, and work-related PTSD.
The research is also clear that compassion is something we can proactively cultivate. There are cognitive/analytical techniques that, when practiced sincerely, allow us to reframe our relationships with others.
This series will use the science of compassion and evidence-based tools to improve providers’ experiences. Join us as Dr. Ryan Bayley, executive coach for healthcare leaders, guides us in a step-wise fashion beginning with self-compassion, broadening that to others, and then seeing on a more practical level how compassion informs practical communication skills necessary in today’s stressed environment.
Over the course of this series, participants will:
1. Explore the science of compassion and self-compassion as tools for increasing provider well-being and optimism
2. Examine brief, evidence-based techniques to increase internal and external compassion to improve one’s daily experience of their work
3. Discuss compassion-based communication techniques to better navigate challenging patient and provider interactions

All live webinars are from 9:00-10:00 am HST. The live webinars will be recorded and available as on-demand learning opportunities following the event. CE credits are available for the online educational offerings through 12/31/22.

KAKA`AKO WELLNESS CLASSES
ZUMBA
Thursdays, 5:00 – 6:00pm

Class Information: Zumba® is a dance inspired group fitness class that features Latin and International rhythms. It features a combination of low and high intensity moves to provide an interval fitness workout.
To participate: Due to COVID restrictions, there is currently a 10 person limit for in-person classes at the UHCC Wellness Center (Instructor + 9 students). Please go to the Zumba Sign-up Sheet and enter your name on the day you would like to attend class. If the 10 person max has been reached for that day, you’ll have to sign-up for another day. If you sign-up and later realize that you can’t make it to class that day, please remove your name from the list so others have the opportunity to sign-up. Dress for active fun. Bring water and towel.
TAI CHI CHUAN (TAIJIQUAN)
In person classes have resumed.

Class Information: Tai Chi Chuan (Taijiquan) is frequently viewed as a slow motion form of Chinese moving meditation, exercise, or martial art. Millions of people around the world practice this art as a way to relieve stress, gain flexibility, strength, and mental focus. It is useful to improve balance and enhance health. Dating back to the 1700’s in China, it began as a powerful martial art. In the 1930’s it was popularized across China, and by the 1950’s it had spread around the world. The Wednesday class is presented by instructors from The Hawaii Wushu Center who have 40+ years of experience practicing and teaching this art. BAGUA ZHANG (BAGUAZHANG)

Class Information: Bagua Zhang (Baguazhang) is a powerful Chinese martial that was developed in the 1800’s and was used by the security forces of the Forbidden City in Beijing, China, in the early 1900’s. It is widely known in China, but is not that familiar to those in other parts of the world. It features vigorous movements and provides the player with a good workout, and self-defense skills. The Thursday class instructor is from The Hawaii Wushu Center and has 40+ years of experience practicing and teaching this art. PING PONG CLUB
Monday, Tuesday, Friday 5:00 – 7:00pm
Class Information: The UH Cancer Center Ping Pong Club is where top players can meet and train along with faculty, staff and students from the University of Hawaii. The Ping Pong Club was founded and is run by Dr. Michele Carbone. The club is fortunate to have Carlos Ko, the number one Nationally ranked player in the State of Hawaiʻi for the past 10 years, serve as an advisor. At this time due to COVID-19 protocols, a maximum of 12 players are allowed in the room at any given time. There are 4 tables, which normally accommodate a maximum of 8 players. If you are interested in joining the club, you may contact Carlos at (808) 688-3356 to see when there is space available.
