Friends of the Gayman Library
The Friends of the Gayman Library are looking for volunteers to donate water and baked goods to the library bake sale at Home and School's Scholastic Book Fair Family Night on Thursday, October 6. All proceeds from the bake sale support library activities, such as Pumpkin Fest participation gifts and book dedications.
If you are baking an item, we ask that you try and package it individually. Because the library is a peanut-free area, tree nuts should be avoided in baked goods. Items can be dropped off in the office or brought to the library on October 6. Leftovers will be donated to a local free community dinner for those in need in Bucks County.
For inspiration, this year's book fair theme is based on pirates.

Celebrate Education Week
We invite you to join us during Celebrate Education Week from October 10th - 14th. We ask that you remember that your presence in the classroom can change the instructional dynamic. Please try to remain as "invisible" as possible. A couple of other reminders:
- Please turn off cell phones upon entering the school.
- If at all possible we discourage bringing siblings into the classroom.
- You will need to sign-in at the office. When the visitation time is over we ask you leave the classroom quietly and sign-out before exiting the building.

Central Bucks Elementary Health Curriculum - Personal Safety
As part of the Central Bucks School District Elementary Health Curriculum, a unit on personal safety is taught to students in grades K-6. The primary purpose of the K-5 program is to make children more aware of sexual abuse by providing them with information appropriate to their age level as well as help them to develop self-protection skills that will make them less vulnerable to exploitation.
Grade 6 teachers address the “Dangerous Stranger” issue taught in grade K-5 using material which is thematically similar to the materials used in the earlier grades. The grade 6 Internet Safety unit is presented in a contemporary manner by utilizing a PowerPoint slide show about internet safety.
A PDF version of the PowerPoints (instructional curriculum) used in the classrooms can be viewed at: http://www.cbsd.org/site/Default.aspx?PageID=33541.
Parents may also review the video material included in this curriculum by clicking on the link below:

This program will be taught at each Elementary School throughout the school year. A note from your child’s teacher will inform you of the specific week that these lessons will be taught. Should a parent for some reason wish to have their child excused from the program, they should send a written request to my attention.
As always, please do not hesitate to call with any questions.
Sincerely,
Michael Testani

HANDWRITING CLUB VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
We need volunteers willing to be trained by our Occupational Therapist, Mrs. Lisa Hinkel, on ways to help students strengthen hand muscles and practice fine motor skills to improve handwriting. Training by Mrs. Hinkel will take place on Thursday, Oct. 6, from 11:30 to 12:30PM. Once trained, your contact information will be shared with classroom teachers, who will then contact you to set up mutually-convenient times for you to work one-on-one with a student for no more than 15 minutes.
You could volunteer for as much or little time as best suits your schedule. No previous experience is necessary – just kindness, patience and enthusiasm (and volunteer clearance). To sign up to attend the training, or for any questions, please contact Suzanne Vass, Student Support Counselor, at svass@cbsd.org.
Central Bucks Health Curriculum - Tobacco, Alcohol, and Other Drugs
As part of the Central Bucks School District Elementary Health Curriculum, a unit entitled Tobacco, Alcohol, and Other Drugs is taught to pupils in grades K-6. The primary purpose of this program is to educate the children on the negative impacts of tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs, as well as the impact of negative peer influences.
Your child’s teacher will teach researched-based lessons developed by Central Bucks teachers and certified school nurses using HealthTeacher.com as a resource. In order to deliver a consistent, cohesive curriculum, all Central Bucks teachers will deliver this curriculum during Red Ribbon Week, October 19-30. Course level goals and objectives can be found on the school district’s website: http://www.cbsd.org/Page/1497
A PDF version of the PowerPoints (instructional curriculum) used in the classrooms can be viewed at http://www.cbsd.org/Page/24978 . Should parents wish to have their child excused from the program, they should send a written request to my attention.

Caterpillars and butterflies Appear in 3rd grade
Caterpillars and butterflies…and so much more! 3rd grade has thoroughly enjoyed the hands-on aspect of their first science unit. The students successfully cared for caterpillars and diligently observed them as they prepared to become butterflies. The grade level took a chance and dodged the raindrops last week to release the butterflies into Gayman’s own butterfly garden. These beautiful hands were certainly helping the insect world!
Vendor Give Back Programs
The Vendors Give Back committee would like to remind everyone to please send in the following with your students : Box Tops for Education labels, caps and codes from boxes of COCA-COLA products (Coke, Diet Coke, Sprite, PowerAde, Fuze, Fanta), and Tyson A+ labels. There is a folder in every class room for collection. The points from these items accumulate into dollars to help benefit the students throughout the year.
We have also just received 16 balls for the students to use on the playground from Labels for Education. Labels for Education is being discontinued, however any labels that are sent in can still be redeemed.
If you have a Giant Shoppers card please make sure that you register it via the Giant website and identify Gayman as your school. If you already registered your card you do not have to register again. Last year Gayman received over $3000.00 from the Giant Reward program!
