Art Studio News
Kindergarten and First Grade classes are connecting art with music. They are making a variety of animal faces to go with their music program TOO MUCH NOISE! Second Graders are participating in the Wichita Festival Tot Trot Contest. They are learning how to draw kids running in a race. Kindergarten and first grade will also do the contest. Third through Fifth grade are creating art in the Technology Studio. Third graders are using Bee Bots to make abstract art by attaching markers to the bot and coding their design. They are also learning about Wassily Kandisnsky who is known as the Father of Abstract Art. Fourth and Fifth graders are using computers to draw a design for this year’s Yearbook. One design will be chosen for the front cover. Best of Luck!
In Art Club students helped paint a tiger for the Book Fair , they will also help with a few props for the K/1 Music Program. Nice Job!
Several McLean Students have their winter artwork displayed at the AMAC for the Month of January.
February finds us studying physical science in the lab. Fifth grade has been studying properties of matter. This month they will focus on Earth’s spheres. Ask your favorite fifth grader if they can explain the biosphere, hydrosphere, atmosphere or geosphere! Fourth grade is wrapping up their electricity unit and will begin learning about other types of energy. Ask your favorite fourth grader what an insulator or a conductor does! Third grade just finished a unit on measurement and will use that knowledge for experimenting with states of matter. Second grade is learning about force and motion and will be experimenting with friction this month. First grade is learning about solids and liquids. Next, we will study properties of light. Kindergarten is finishing their wood unit and will be making particleboard in the lab. We had a great time during our wood-working day! Thank you to the parents and grandparents that helped!
Check it Out at the Library
In the library, some 3rd-5th grade students participated in our Battle of the Books competition. The winning team was able to go compete in the district competition, where they came in first place. I am so proud of all of the McLean students that competed this year, they all worked very hard!
Some of the activities 2nd – 5th grade students have been working on in the library are creating dialogue between characters in a story, creating illustrations and then explaining how it relates to the story. The kindergarten and first graders have been working on identifying what happens in the beginning, middle, and end of stories as well as comprehension.
Keep on reading!

January has been a busy month here in the Music Room! After a successful musical in December, grade 4 and 5 began learning to play the ukulele, thanks to our classroom set purchased by our Fabulous PTA last year. Grades 3, 4 & 5 attended their second Young People’s Concert at the Wichita Symphony, and it was a great program on Beethoven. Grades K and 1 have been learning their music for their March 3rd performance of “Too Much Noise!” and have been excelling at Rhythm Sticks and movement activities.
Two of our 5th grade students, Lily and Riley represented McLean in the NW Area Honor choir. They rehearsed 2 nights a week for the entire month of January with approximately 100 area students and they did a wonderful job at the concert!
Kindergarten and 1st Grade are preparing their musical, “Too Much Noise!” and it’s going to be a fun one! Mrs. Adams is coordinating with us in Art Class for individual items and Art Club is helping her with some of the props. We are lucky to have her help!

Grades 4 and 5 move on to advanced note reading and solfeggio skills in preparation for the late April piano lab arrival and for future use in Band, choir or Orchestra in 6th grade. If you remember the song, “Do Re Mi” from “The Sound of Music” you will know the solfegge syllables! Thanks for supporting your child’s musical growth. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions. I’ll do my best to help out.
