Kindergarten
March 8th
Math
We wrapped up some addition work and moved into subtraction this week. We began by asking students to cross out the objects in order to demonstrate that they are being taken away. They were asked to write the number of objects left. We started to look at subtraction equations and match the equation to the picture representation.
Reading
We are continuing to develop as readers by reading! Students are reading books independently and using the skills we have taught to continue to progress with more challenging books.
Writing
We are continuing our How To books. We have shared examples of How To books, created a class How To book and are beginning to create our own How To books. We are very excited to create a book to teach other people the many things we know how to do. You will see examples of this writing at Parent Teacher Conferences next week.
Science
In order to create a fun and engaging way to learn about force and motion, students have been challenged to build a pinball machine. We begun by watching a pinball machine and trying to figure out how the pinball starts to move. We played Rugball to learn about pushes and pulls and how a force is exerted on an object. Then, we began to design the launcher of our pinball machine. You will also be able to see our creations at conferences next week.
Student-Led Conferences
Please check your child’s Friday Folder and look for the information regarding Parent-Teacher Conferences. We have sent a reminder about what to expect. Parent-Teacher Conferences are scheduled for Thursday, March 14th from 3:00-8:00 P.M. and Friday, March 15th from 11:00 A.M. - 4:00 P.M. The students are incredibly excited to share their learning with you! Don't forget to bring your kindergartner when you come!
Report Cards
Report Cards were sent home today in Friday folders! Each area on the report card states a skill/standard that the students are expected to achieve by the END of kindergarten. We give an indicator or grade that shows your child's current level of ability when progressing toward the standard. For many of the standards, we do not expect students to receive MTG (meeting) until the end of kindergarten. If students demonstrate that they have met the standard prior to the end of the year they will begin working toward a higher level standard. (Sometimes a 1st grade standard.) In the second trimester, many students will receive a DEV (developing) or BEG (beginning) score because we will continue to work to meet the standard throughout the remainder school year. We will be able to share more information at Parent-Teacher Conferences on March 14th and 15th! We look forward to seeing you then!
