Expect Excellence In Everything
May 13, 2022
A Note from Mr. Bender
Thank you for a very successful Milestones administration! Our students, families, and staff did a phenomenal job! We appreciate your support in ensuring students were well-rested and ready to show what they know and are able to do. Now, our students are finishing the year by taking District Assessments in grades K-5. Thank you, again, for all your support during this year.
Congratulations to this year’s Relay For Life team for raising over $5,000! Thank you to all who were able to participate in fundraising this year. There is one last fundraiser left- “Jams and Stuff!” On May 20th, wear your pajamas to school for $1.00. Pay an extra $1.00 to bring your favorite stuffed animal!
It is time to register for the summer reading program. See below for information on how to register and program requirements. We hope to celebrate many Woodward Mill readers next year! If you have any questions about the summer reading program, please email Mrs. Alden at Jennifer.Alden@gcpsk12.org.

Character Trait and Mindfulness Activity of the Month
Every month, we focus on a character trait to instill great character into our cubs. The character trait for the month of May is Perseverance. Perseverance is the perfect character trait to talk about as we enter the home stretch of the school year! Perseverance means continuing to try your best, even when it is hard and even if you are tired. As we finish out the school year, let’s encourage our students to show perseverance and try their best until the last day! As a reminder, teachers will be choosing one student this month who has exhibited perseverance the most to represent his/her class as the Cub of the Month.
Spotlight on SEL Picture Books
A Bike Like Sergio's by Maribeth Boelts
Ruben wishes for a new shiny bike like his friend Sergio’s, but he knows that money is tight for his family right now. When Ruben scoops up what he assumes is a dollar bill dropped by a neighbor, he is conflicted about returning it. Later he discovers it is actually a $100 bill, which is enough to buy a new bike. When he misplaces the bill, Ruben suddenly understands how it feels to lose something valuable, and realizes what is the right thing to do. This story highlights the character traits of honesty and integrity.
2022 Summer Reading Challenge
It’s time to register for the 2022 Summer Reading Challenge at the Gwinnett County Public Library! The Gwinnett Public Library offers a variety of in-person and virtual programs during the summer months to encourage reading. Use the link below to register for an individual or family Beanstack account.
In August, we will recognize all rising Woodward Mill K-5 students, who participate in AND log 500 minutes of reading in the GCPL summer reading challenge. The GCPL uses the digital program, Beanstack, to keep track of student reading.
Once a student logs at least 500 minutes of reading time in Beanstack, they will be considered as having completed the program for Woodward Mill recognition purposes. The GCPL will award prizes as students earn points throughout the program. At Woodward Mill, the GCPS BookMobile will visit our school as a part of our summer reading recognition in late August. Suggested summer reading lists will be sent home in next week’s Friday folders. If you have any questions about Beanstack or summer reading, please email Jennifer.Alden@gcpsk12.org.
Library Book Return
All kindergarten and first grade student media center books were due on Friday, May 13. Media center books for students in grades 2-5 are due on Wednesday, May 18.
Please contact the media staff if you have any questions about your student’s media account. If you need to pay for a lost/damaged book, payment can be made by cash, check, or through MyPaymentsPlus. Per GCPS policy, lost/damaged elementary media center book fines are $15.00. Thank you for your help with these end of the year procedures.
