Recruitment & Retention: A Vital K-12/University Issue
Join us for an informative, exciting gathering-discussion
“Currently, 44% of Georgia’s newly hired teachers are dropping out of the profession by year five. Equally alarming is that there was a 16% dip from 2010 to 2014 in the number of candidates entering Georgia’s teacher preparation programs." State Superintendent Richard Woods
Laurie Allison, Executive Director of Northeast Georgia RESA, will start our conversation!
Laurie Allison, a University of Georgia alumna, is executive director of Northeast Georgia Regional Service Agency (NEGA RESA), proving support services for 14 school districts. Allison created and launched the NEGA RESA Leadership Academy, developing a pipeline of current and aspiring leaders. She has served as a leader in Gwinnett Public Schools and Social Circle City Schools, gaining a broad perspective of the varying needs of educators throughout Georgia. She has served as a teacher, assistant principal, principal, human resource director, leadership coach, federal programs director, curriculum director, and assistant superintendent. Additionally, she supports the teacher pipeline by serving as a part-time instructor in the College of Education at UGA. A hallmark of her career is that she supports public education through the development of others. Come together with colleagues at both the K-12 level and the University level to discuss current initiatives related to recruitment and retention and brainstorm new ideas.

You are invited to join K-12 and University colleagues to discuss issues related to teacher recruitment and retention
For both recruitment and retention, teachers go and stay where they feel their voice is heard and they have a sense of agency. (This sentiment is included in both the GADOE Teacher Burnout Report and in multiple studies (including one by the Peabody Journal of Education and the Teachers College Record.) To promote an environment of trust and a sense of self efficacy, teachers need more control over the way in which their classrooms are managed. What would this look like in practice? How can both building level administrators and HR professionals support creating such an environment in our schools?
