The Air-Sea Connection
How are the ocean and the atmosphere connected?
The five layers of the atmosphere and facts about them.
Troposphere- the first layer above the surface and contains half of the Earth's atmosphere. Stratosphere- many jet aircraft's fly in this area because it is very stable. Mesosphere- meteors or rock fragments burn up in this area. Thermosphere- temperatures climb quickly in the lower thermosphere (below 200 to 300 km altitude), then level off and hold fairly steady with increasing altitude above that height. Solar activity strongly influences tempatures in the thermosphere. Exosphere- The region where atoms and molecules escape into space is referred to as the exosphere.
What components make up the air?
Though you can't tell by looking at it, air is made up of many different components. About 78% of Earth's atmosphere is nitrogen, and only about 21% is oxygen. Argon makes up less than one percent (only 0.9% of the atmosphere is argon).

What is the coriolis effect?
an effect whereby a mass moving in a rotating system experiences a force (the Coriolis force ) acting perpendicular to the direction of motion and to the axis of rotation. On the earth, the effect tends to deflect moving objects to the right in the northern hemisphere and to the left in the southern and is important in the formation of cyclonic weather systems.
