Second Grade Literacy News
September 25th-29th
Curriculum Updates:
It was great to see some of you at Open House Night! Please sign up for a conference if you haven't already done so. Looking forward to meeting with you.
In Fundations, please note that we are continuing our review of concepts taught in first grade and we have not started learning second grade concepts yet; the review short vowel sounds, consonant sounds, digraphs, when to use c, k, and ck, glued sounds, bonus letters, and to read and spell words with blends (4-5 sound words).
We started our Wit and Wisdom curriculum last week, and I'm so excited about how engaged the children were! Here is a brief overview of our first week: the students studied a famous works of visual art, and they learned how to notice and wonder about what they saw in the painting. They also studied a poem titled "Weather" by Eve Merriam, and thought about how changes in weather and seasons can impact people and animals. This week we will think about the season of fall specifically, and we will read the text How Do You Know It's Fall to guide our thinking.
Our focusing question this week: how do changes in fall weather impact people and nature?
Behavior Information from last week (in case you missed it):
Class Dojo is being used as our individual and whole class behavior system. Each student has their own monster. This monster can earn points for following our class rules (that we developed together). At the end of the week, the students can cash in their points for a prize or a fun privilege! We will discuss this in greater depth at our Open House Night, but the students are loving that their monsters earn points (and we are too!) 😊. Our hope is that we can focus primarily on the earning of points, rather than taking away points. However, there are a couple instances when the subtracting of points will happen: failing to cooperate/listen to staff and unsafe behavior.
Looking forward to a productive week ahead!

Homework Information
September 25th
What is the literacy homework schedule?
The students will have homework every M-Th that school is in session. The students will never have homework on Fridays or during vacation weeks.
What will my child be expected to do?
Quick reading or spelling practice! The homework will always be practicing a concept that they already learned in class. Shouldn't take more than 10-15 minutes!
How will the students be graded on homework? The rating scale is like the report card:
1- missing / very incomplete
2 - some corrections need to be made
3 - 1-2 errors, work is neat and shows effort
4 - completely accurate and best effort (colored pictures)
Thank you!

P.S. Thank you for all the donations! Sal's family donated a class set of clipboards and we are so appreciative! If anyone has prizes for the prize bowl, we can always use them. Thank you! 😊
