Wisdom from the Queen Bee Mrs. Starlin
We have had a busy productive week at Hose. I saw many smiles for our annual pictures. If you missed picture day this Thursday, there will be a makeup day in October and more details will follow. We have our first calendar holiday next week as Monday is Labor Day and there will be no school - enjoy the long weekend! This could be a great time to read a favorite book together or maybe a time to catch up on happenings in your child’s day at school.
How was your day? “Good.” What did you do? “Nothing.” Sound familiar?
Sometimes when you’re just trying to connect with your child, it’s easy for them to shut down, oftentimes hidden behind an electronic screen. But asking the right questions can help facilitate real conversation. Take advantage of opportunities, whether it’s in the car on the way to after-school activities, at the dinner table, or anywhere. Especially with young children, asking about their day quickly after school may produce the most conversation. Young children often only remember the last activity. Specific, open-ended questions (questions they can't just answer yes or no to) will usually produce the most “talk.” Here are a few to try out: What book did you read? What did you play outside? Who was a good friend today? What did they do to be a good friend? I encourage you to ask - and then listen.

Building Foundations with Mrs. Reef
This year we will continue to work on building our student’s oral language and vocabulary in all three elementary buildings. Oral language and vocabulary help build a strong foundation so that kids are able to speak, read and write. For the next few weeks I will be sharing ideas to help your kiddos expand their oral language and vocabulary. In the next newsletter, look for the headline Expanding Oral Language & Vocabulary to find some helpful tips.
Together, we can help our little ones build a strong foundation!

REINdear information
It still feels warm outside and the calendar says September, but it is officially REINdear time!! If you are on free or reduced lunch and you think you will have a need for assistance with gifts for your children this Christmas, forms will be available for pick up at our schools this Thursday, September 10.
The pick up schedule for Thursday, September 10 is as follows:
8:00 - 10:00 -- Hoover
10:00 - 12:00 -- Nicholson
12:00 - 2:00 -- Hose
12:00 - 3:00 - Willson
You may pick them up at any of the schools listed above--whichever time or location is more convenient for you. Please wear a mask. Forms may also be picked up on Friday at the school offices if you are unable to make it on Thursday. No forms will be sent home in backpacks. After Friday, forms will need to be picked up at the Youth Service Bureau. All REINdear forms must be returned directly to the Youth Service Bureau (not to the schools).
