News, News, News!!!
1-11-16 to 1-15-16
The upcoming weeks will be quite busy within our 3rd and 4th grade world!
Within our English/Language Arts block, we will be beginning a unit on Fables, Folktales, and Myths. Our first story that we will be reading and analyzing is "Knots on a Counting Rope". While reviewing our basic story comprehension skills, students will also be on the search for the hidden meaning within this story. We are reinforcing grade-level writing skills and how to write to inform and respond properly to a prompt.
Students will also be learning about homophones. We will be working as a group to locate the incorrectly spelled words and replace them with correct spellings.
Both grade levels are beginning new areas in the world of math! Factors, multiples, prime, and composite numbers will be the focus for both grades 3 and 4, as we continue to build our multiplication skills and begin to learn division rules and strategies.
We have been reviewing the steps of the scientific method, in preparation for our whole-class (STEM) fair project. This week, we will be working on formulating a question and hypothesis, as well as designing our procedure. In addition, to the STEM fair, students will be beginning a unit on the Solar System! We will be visiting the Star Lab on Thursday morning for our Solar System introduction, so be sure to ask your astronomer about what they viewed and learned!
As quarter 2 comes to an end, we are completing our quarter 2 checks.
Please be aware of the dates that students will be completing our quarterly checks:
-Writing: Thursday, January 14, 2016
-Humanities (Reading-computer based): Tuesday, January 19, 2016
-Math (computer based): Wednesday, January 20, 2016
