21 Sports ... 1 Team ... WE ARE HOBART
Some HIGHLIGHTS were a volleyball win over a tough Hanover Central squad, both soccer teams winning OVERTIME matches against Andrean, football getting back to "what we do" and defeating KV to spoil their homecoming, and our boys tennis team celebrating senior night.
Guns N' Roses had an "Appetite for Destruction" in the summer of 1987, Brickies have an "Appetite for Sports" in the fall of 2018 ... and if this newsletter doesn't satisfy your 'appetite', you really need to "like' our Hobart Athletic Department page on facebook - it's a lot to digest, but well worth it!
Football
Coach Osika described the game as the following, "We got back to what we do best". Hobart got the ball first, drove down the field for an opening drive touchdown, and set the tone for the evening that we would NOT be denied. The play of the game came early in the 2nd quarter, sophmore Zach Vode made an INCREDIBLE catch on a bomb from classmate Riley Johnston and eluded pursuing defenders as he danced his way 76 yards into the endzone and a 14-0 Brickies lead! After KV scored to cut the deficit to 24-6 midway through the 4th quarter, it was Vode again ... this time hauling in a pass from senior Ryan Leto and turning a 10-yard out into a 33-yard touchdown!
Overall, the defense we've grown to know and love returned and held a scrappy KV team to just over 200 yards of total offense and the lone touchdown.
Highland is next for the 5-1 Brickies ... and it's SENIOR PARENT NIGHT next Friday at THE BRICKYARD

Volleyball
On Tuesday, the Highland Lady Trojans came to town for an NCC showdown. In a very competitive match, it was Highland who got the best of the Brickies in 4 games - 25-22, 20-25, 25-20, 25-17. Once again, it was junior Addison Metts filling up the stat sheet with 8 digs, 2 blocks and a team high 19 kills. Sophomore Sasha Thomas recorded 19 digs and junior Paige Cooper chipped in 10 assists.
On Wednesday, Hobart welcomed Hanover Central to the 'friendly city' ... but our girls weren't very 'hospitable' as we sent the Lady Wildcats back to Cedar Lake with a loss! In a tight game, our Lady Brickies persevered and won in 3 by the scores of 25-21, 25-23 and 25-20! It was a GREAT TEAM EFFORT for the girls as they spread the wealth on the stat sheet - Metts led with 20 kills, sophomore Haley Pint recorded 9 digs and classmate Jessica Fazekas contributed 25 assists!
To finish the week of competition, our girls traveled south to DeMotte to take on KV. In another tough NCC match-up, our girls fell in 4 games - 25-18, 22-25, 25-20 and 25-15. Addison Metts was all over the place against the Kougars as she recorded 14 kills, 4 blocks and 18 digs! Jessica Fazekas led Hobart with 16 assists.
The girls are 11-14 on the season with just a few weeks left until we host the IHSAA Sectional on October 11th & 13th!
Tennis
Monday, defending sectional champion Merrillville came to town for a pre-state tournament series showdown. Hobart fought valiantly but ultimately fell to the Pirates by the score of 5-0. Senior Cannon Briggs was honored before the match began as the boys celebrated SENIOR NIGHT ... Cannon (our lone senior tennis player) has been an integral part of our boys tennis team throughout his high school career - playing both #1 doubles and #3 singles this season!
Thursday, our boys traveled to the hub city to do battle with area powerhouse Crown Point. In their last regular season competition of the fall, the Bulldogs 'held serve' and blanked the young Brickies 5-0.
With only 1 senior on the roster, the young Brickies have had to grow up fast and gain valuable experience on the fly this year. They have competed extremely well and are ready to challenge for another sectional title this week as we host the IHSAA boys tennis sectional on Wednesday and Thursday! GOOD LUCK BOYS!

Soccer
Girls
With 2 road games on the schedule, our girls had to be ROAD WARRIORS ... and WARRIORS they were!
Tuesday at Andrean, Hobart got behind 2-0 early in the first half, but battled back with goals by junior Lauren Romeo and senior Olexia Brookshire to tie it up! After another Romeo goal gave the Bricks a brief 3-2 lead, Andrean scored the next 2 goals making it 4-3. With time running low, it was Brookshire to the rescue ... this time with a beautiful left footed shot from 25 yards out to send the game to OVERTIME! Neither team could muster a goal in the 2 overtime sessions - so it was ANOTHER SHOOT-OUT ... the girls 3rd in 3 weeks!
In the shootout, Hobart scored on ALL 5 shots and secured their 3rd NCC win of the season ... ALL BY SHOOT-OUT!
Thursday at Boone Grove, our girls made quick work of the Wolves by notching a 4-2 victory - their 3rd in a row! This time is was junior Grace Nestich with the 'hat trick' of 3 goals and sophomore Cecilia Provins netting the 4th goal for the Brickies. Freshman Allie LaVelle recorded 6 saves in the win!
The girls are now 6-5-1 on the year ... and with the sectional a week away, it appears they are peaking at just the right time!
Boys
With 3 games this week - the "goal" was to continue improving and OH MY ... did they ever!
Against UNDEFEATED Rensselaer on Monday, the Brickies led 1-0 at the half, only to give up 2 in the last 40 minutes to fall 2-1. It was a terrific effort by our boys to battle a top area team for 80 minutes.
On Wednesday, it was the boys' turn to take on Andrean ... and just like the girls, our boys were tied after 2 halves of play, which meant OVERTIME! As time was winding down in the 2nd 7 minute overtime period, Hobart attacked the goal hard and senior Cameron Tarry scored a rebound goal to give the Brickies a 1-0 lead that held up for the WIN! Senior goalkeeper Johan Spriolazzi, along with the rest of Hobart's defenders, was stellar in protecting the net and 'pitching' a shutout against the 59ers on SENIOR NIGHT!
Saturday brought Kouts to town ... and a shot at back-to-back victories. Hobart was ALL OVER the net in the 1st 40 minutes, but just couldn't quite finish and the score was an even 0-0 at the half. In the 2nd half, our boys had NO TROUBLE finding the net REPEATEDLY as the Brickies scored 3 GOALS in the first 10 minutes of the 2nd half (2 more by Tarry and 1 by freshman Ivan Garcia) and Hobart blanked the Mustangs by the score of 3-0! It was the 2nd consecutive shutout for the Hobart D-D-D-DEFENSE and the Brickies' 3rd win in their last 5 tries - GREAT JOB BOYS!
Not to be out-done by our girls, it also appears the boys soccer team is figuring things out at the right time with sectional play a week away!
