Orangutans are the big, hairy mammals that live in Indonesia and Sumatra. They live in trees and can act / climb like a human. There scientific name is Pongo Abelii.
Appearance
Orangutangs are a big, hairy, orange largest arboreal mammal in the world. Males can weigh up to 120kg and grow up to 1.5 metres. They have 32 teeth and have a human like head and hands.
Habitat
Orangutans live in a jungle / rainforest areas in Indonesia and Sumatra. 1 quarter of these animals live in protected areas. They build a new shelter to sleep in every night.
Behaviour
For an animal orangutans are very smart. They can do simple human activities on their own. Baby orangutans stay with there mother for 6-7 years until they learn survival skills.
Diet
Orangutans have a very simple diet. They can have a starvation diet, where they only eat bark and leaves for many months. Apart from that most orangutans like to eat figs from trees.
Threats
As you may know orang-utans are becoming extinct as they are endangered. This is all because of there habitat (trees) being cut down. There are 40,000 orang-utans left in the world and 20,000 in Indonesia.
