Voyager Family News
Week of January 11, 2021
Strand Spotlights and Info:
Dear Voyager Families,
Welcome to our new Voyager families! Our teachers and staff were so excited to see our students back in virtual classrooms this week! We hope you are having a wonderful weekend and staying safe and healthy.
- Based on case numbers in our county and school district, we are currently not open for school in person and all students are in BRIDGE learning. We intend to reopen for in-person learning on February 1.
- Families have the opportunity to change their students' placements in full-time BRIDGE or partial in-person learning for our second semester beginning February 1. Please use THIS SURVEY to indicate that you would like to CHANGE your child from BRIDGE to partial in-person learning or vice versa. IF YOU ARE SATISFIED WITH YOUR CHILD'S CURRENT PLACEMENT, YOU DO NOT NEED TO RESPOND TO THE SURVEY. THIS SURVEY IS NOT INTENDED FOR SILVER STRAND STATE PRESCHOOL STUDENTS.
- We are holding a School Site Council Meeting on Wednesday, January 13th at 2:15 to 3PM to review and approve our site Emergency Plan (attached below this section). We are encouraging family members to attend. Future School Site Council Meetings will include reviews of our budget and School Plan for Student Achievement. Zoom information: ID: 909 664 2478/Passcode Voyager.
- Our PTO General Meeting will be Thursday, January 14 at 7 PM via Zoom. Please join the meeting to discuss family fun activities in the New Year!

YOU'VE BEEN STUNG!
As part of CSF’s Hive 365 campaign, bees will descend upon home fronts of different Coronado households. (You may have seen some around town already!) After making a donation to CSF, the family will decide who will be “stung” next, placing the bees and the hive in the new family’s yard, encouraging them to make a donation and continuing the lifecycle of fun.
The suggested donation per household is $365, however, donations of any amount are appreciated! All donations go to fund pathways in STEM and Arts at all 4 CUSD schools.
GET STUNG
If you would like to be the next Coronado family to "Get Stung", email csf@csfkids.org. If you are already a member of Hive 365 or are a CSF monthly recurring donor, we would love for you to participate with or without an additional donation. Just let us know!

Meal Distribution and Free Lunch Opportunity
GRAB&GO MEALS WILL BE DISTRIBUTED ON MONDAYS BETWEEN 3:30-5PM unless it's a holiday.
Free lunch meals available daily for those in need!
The Child Nutrition Services Department realizes that students cannot learn without having nutritious foods to eat. Therefore, we have decided to offer free meals daily to those students in need, starting the week of November 2nd.
Per USDA regulations, students are only allowed to receive one breakfast and/or lunch meal daily. If a student receives weekly meals (7 breakfasts and 7 lunches) through our bulk meal distribution on Mondays, they will not be able to take part in the daily lunches available at their school site.
If you would like your student(s) to receive free meals daily (or on a specific day), you must notify Charity Campbell, Director of Child Nutrition Services, one week in advance. A consent form will be emailed to you, stating that your student(s) did not receive meals through the bulk meal distribution. The signed copy must be emailed back prior to student meal pick up for record keeping purposes.
The bagged lunch meal will consist of a cold entrée (such as a sandwich), a fruit, vegetable, and milk. The student (or parent) will be able to pick up the free lunch meal at the following times in their school cafeteria:
· Silver Strand: 10:45am-12:00pm*
· Village Elementary: 10:45am-12:00pm*
· Coronado Middle School: 11:45am-12:30pm
· Coronado High School: 11:45-12:30 (Monday); 11:30am-12:15pm (Tuesday-Friday)
*Please note that elementary school students must consume meals off campus.
Thank you and we look forward to serving you!

In-Person Learning Guidelines
- Please ensure your child brings a water bottle and snack to school each day; drinking fountains are not available for student use.
- Thank you for continuing to make arrival and dismissal so smooth and safe. Our students will continue to enter and exit through designated gates per grade level. Students may begin lining up at 7:50 AM/12:05 PM (avoid being earlier, please) and gates will open for students to enter campus and proceed to classrooms at 7:55 AM/12:10 PM.
- USE THE CROSSWALK ADJACENT TO STAFF PARKING LOT to walk your child to campus. PLEASE DO NOT WALK ACROSS THE CAR LINE.
- Family members, PLEASE DO NOT DRIVE OR WALK INTO THE STAFF PARKING LOT TO DROP OFF 4TH/5TH GRADERS. Preschool families will use this area for dropoff/pickup.
- Please pick up students promptly at 10:45 in the AM and 3 PM in the afternoon.
- TK-1st graders will be dismissed directly to parents/guardians/family members. All other grades may be dropped off/picked up in the car line or reunite with family members/walk/bike to and from school independently.
- Students arriving late to school will enter through the office.
- Please do NOT send your child to school if he/she is exhibiting any symptoms. See section below for guidance and protocols.
- Students will not have a traditional recess on the playground, but will go outside for a snack and mask break and distanced socializing.
COVID Symptoms Screening and Guidance/Protocols
A Guide for Parents
ON ILLNESS AND POSITIVE TESTS FOR COVID-19 VIRUS
MY CHILD IS SICK OR TESTED POSITIVE. WHEN CAN MY CHILD RETURN TO SCHOOL?
SICK AND TESTS NEGATIVE FOR THE COVID-19 VIRUS
If your child gets sick and decides to get a COVID-19 test and the test is negative your child can return after the following:
1) It has been 72 hours from symptoms resolving and
2) You provide proof of the negative test results to the school site.
SICK AND DOES NOT TAKE A COVID-19 TEST
If your child gets sick and you or your healthcare provider decides not to have them get a test to determine if he/she has COVID, they may return when:
1) It is at least 10 days from their symptom onset and
2) They are without a fever for 24 hours with no fever reducing medication and
3) Their symptoms are improving.
SICK AND/OR TESTS POSITIVE WITH THE COVID-19 VIRUS
If your child tests positive for COVID-19, he/she may return when:
1) It is at least 10 days from the onset of symptoms or the date they tested positive and
2) They are without a fever for 24 hours with no fever reducing medication and
3) Their symptoms are improving.
WHAT ACTIONS DO I NEED TO TAKE WHEN MY CHILD IS AT HOME SICK?
Families that have a sick child at home should do the following:
□ Stay home: Do not allow your child to leave your home, except to get medical care. As much as possible, others in the family should stay home. If ANYONE in the house tests positive for COVID-19, no one should leave the house.
□ Take care: Make sure they get rest and stay hydrated.
□ Stay in touch with your doctor: Call before seeking medical care for your child. For medical emergencies, call 911 and report your child’s COVID-19 diagnosis during call.
□ One point of contact: If at all possible, separate your child from other people and pets in your household. Try to have one person only care for your child, so others are not exposed.
□ Use a face covering: If your child is over 2 years old and can wear a face mask without finding it hard to breathe, have them wear one when the caregiver is in the room. Do not leave your child alone while they are wearing a face mask. The caregiver should also wear one when in the same room.
□ Separate bathroom use: Have your child use a separate bathroom from other people, if available. If that is not possible, clean and disinfect the bathroom often.
□ Monitor their symptoms: Symptoms of COVID-19 may include any or all of the following: fever, cough, shortness of breath, runny nose, sore throat, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, fatigue, new loss of taste/smell, headache, body aches, and/or poor appetite. □ Consult with your child’s healthcare provider for ways to monitor their symptoms.
□ Follow care instructions: If your doctor or local health department has provided specific instructions, follow these directives.
□ Wash hands often: Everyone in your family should wash their hands well and often.
□ Clean often: Use regular household cleaners or wipes to clean things that get touched often (doorknobs, light switches, toys, remote controls, phones, etc.)
A HOUSEHOLD MEMBER TESTED POSITIVE FOR COVID-19. CAN I BRING MY CHILD TO SCHOOL?
No. If your child has had direct, close contact with anyone who has tested positive for COVID-19 for more than 15 minutes (with or without a mask), within 48 hours of the individual experiencing symptoms and/or testing positive, they must quarantine. Please consult with your school nurse to determine appropriate length of quarantine.
Silver Strand Partial Return to Campus Safe Arrival and Dismissal Plan
Help us keep everyone safe on their way to and from school! See diagram below, as well as Friday Flagpole video demonstrating arrival protocols here.
Students will follow dots and signs which will provide distance as well as directions to gates. We are limiting access to our front office and encourage business to be conducted via phone or email. Students who are late to school may report to the office if gates are closed. Family members of students in grades 1-5 are discouraged from escorting students up to gates to avoid crowding; TK and Kindergarten parents may escort to the kindergarten gate but not enter campus. Please drive and drop off efficiently in the drop-off lane with your child exiting the car at the curb (not street side). Please reserve parking spaces at the back of the staff lot and in front of school/neighborhood for families of TK/Kindergarten students.
- 4th and 5th graders will enter and exit campus through the gate at the lunch area through the staff parking lot and line up starting at 7:50 AM.
- 2nd and 3rd graders will enter and exit campus through the gate between Strand Hall and the office (to the left of the mosaic)
- 1st graders will enter and exit campus through the gate between the office and library.
- TK and Kindergarteners will enter campus through the gate west of the library and will be released first at dismissal.

WEEKLY ORGANIZATION SPOTLIGHT
There are numerous organizations who provide valuable assistance and resources to military families. Each week, I will highlight one such organization.
This week’s organization: USO San Diego, https://sandiego.uso.org/, 619-235-6503
USO San Diego strengthens America's military by keeping them connected to family, home, and country throughout their time in service. In San Diego, USO has four locations. One of which is located in the historic NTC training grounds. This location serves as a home away from home for our local Active Duty and their families. Even due the current COVID-19 situation, USO is here to support. Check out their Facebook page to see the great virtual and drive-thru programming they offer such as, MilSpouse Connect, MilKids Club, Mobile Farmers Market, Workout Wednesday, Wednesday Night Dinner, Thankful Thursday, and more. Coronado Public Library Services
During these unprecedented times when children have had to switch to online activity sooner than expected, Coronado Public Library is making media literacy a priority. For starters, traditional library visits are transformed into virtual offerings, many of which are linked to from the online libraries that the children’s librarian has created especially for Coronado Unified School District’s elementary schools and preschools. The goal is to encourage young students to explore a safe and especially curated online environment.
Our public library has amazing resources for students, including kid-friendly databases, such as Explora Primary School, Novelist K-8 Plus, Britannica School, Teaching Books, ABC Mouse, and databases provided through the California State Library! Check out this video for more information on what the library has in store for you!
CAUGHT BEING AWESOME!
As our educators, parents, and community come together to connect, challenge and champion our students during our district closure, we are humbled by the outpouring of compliments during these trying times. What a positive testament to our CUSD family!
