KINDERGARTEN NEWS
Kindergarten had a blast visiting cool animals at the Pine Knoll Shores Aquarium. We voted to see what animal we enjoyed most: Godwin - otters, Fabbie - sharks, Kearney - otters, Rohrback - sharks , Shell - sharks, Sword - stingrays, Wessel - otters, Williams - otters.
What is the Parade of Nations and Global Field Day? They are our Mini-Olympics. Each class will represent the country they have studied this year in various costumes in the parade. Students will compete for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in various athletic events. Scores are tallied and 1st, 2nd and 3rd place is awarded to classes in the school. Everyone is a winner but not everyone wins a race or gets a medal. Since teachers will help their participants in the races many hands and eyes are needed to help with the kiddos who are cheering on their friends and waiting for their turn to run. If you can help please let your teacher know.
Kinder will be diving into an end of year show. Please join us for a whale of a time on June 9th at 9:30. Students should dress for success in bright, tropical colors. An end of the year award ceremony will follow in each classroom where every learner will be celebrated.
Thanks to our families, PTO and fellow staff for all their kindness during Teacher Appreciation week!
FIRST GRADE NEWS
First graders are as busy as bees these days! Assessments are in motion and we are excited to see all of their growth! However, instruction has not stopped. We are reviewing all story elements by reinforcing beginning, middle, and end. We are digging deep to show evidence from the story to explain the feelings of characters. Narrative writing continues to be our focus.
We are trying to include lots of details, 7-10 sentences with logical sense and spelling many words correctly. Math continues to focus on time to the half hour and supporting our answers to addition and subtraction word problems. In science and social studies we are looking at how people and animals affect earth, the use of natural resources and how what resources are available in our community. Thank you for reinforcing good behavior with consequences as we approach the end of the year!
SECOND GRADE NEWS
Dixon Elementary's second graders celebrated Earth Day by taking a trip to Sturgeon City. Our students had an awesome time learning about wildlife such as rabbits and possums. We made mini terrariums and seed bombs which will spread beautiful wild flowers this summer. A special treat was learning how to plant flowers as we learned about seeds and the life cycle of plants.
THIRD GRADE NEWS
It is a busy and exciting time of year! We have lots to look forward to this month—our school-wide parade of nations, global field day on the 12th, the PTO fun run on the 22nd, and the Leader in Me parent night on the 25th. As the year approaches a close, we continue to remind our third graders that, just like marathon runners at the end of a race, we put forth our best efforts at this time. In mathematics, we are continuing our study of fractions. Students will be learning about economy in Social Studies. In Science, students are learning about plants. Finally, third graders have learned all new skills in ELA, and are engaging in a cumulative review. With EOGs quickly approaching at the end of the month and the beginning of June, we are working hard to review all of the skills we have learned this year. Our students have come such a long way, and we are certainly proud of them!
