Walk Against Hate ~ May 19
Hello Park Village Families! As you know, our school is completing activities to become an official No Place For Hate School this year. As an additional activity, we've chosen to participate in the Walk Against Hate.
Please join PVES teachers, staff, and families at the Walk Against Hate on May 19th 8:30 a.m.-12:00 p.m. at Ingram Plaza, Liberty Station. At this event, Park Village Elementary will be honored for becoming a No Place For Hate School with a banner to display in our MPR! This is a non-political walk to celebrate making all of San Diego No Place For Hate. Thank you for your support! We hope to have a great showing representing our school at the Walk Against Hate on May 19th.

Park Village's Annual 4th and 5th Graders Cross Country Run
The annual PV 4th & 5th Grade Cross Country Run will be held on Tuesday, May 21st at 9:00am. Lace up your shoes and start training! Come one, come all, and cheer on our 4th and 5th graders as they run a mile course around the school. All participants will receive a ribbon, and medals will be awarded to the top finishers.
We will need parent volunteers to make this event successful. Come out and help us while cheering on your child! Or if you are a parent of a child not yet in 4th or 5th grade, come help us out to see what to expect when your child does participate. If you can volunteer in any way (setup, handing out waters, directing runners, timing, photographer, clean up), please contact Inge Buchmiller at buchmilleri@gmail.com.

Counselor's Corner
The last chapter, Chapter 9, in Unselfie: Why Empathetic Kids Succeed in Our All-About-Me World is about empathetic children wanting to make a difference in the world and being “change-makers” and altruistic leaders. This is so uplifting – so hopeful for the future!
Altruistic children are the ultimate Unselfies. They feel another’s pain or recognize a social problem and are driven to find solutions to help. They do it because they are driven by the passion of their hearts. Such is the power of empathy! This chapter is filled with examples of children who saw a need and did something about it.
I recently read an article which said that we are asking kids the wrong question. Instead of “What do you want to be when you grow up?” Ask: “How do you want to make a difference in the world?” That question will lead them to their place in the world better than the first question. Not only does it help them focus outside themselves but it will make them ready for a world in which so many of the jobs they will have are not even in existence yet.
Key concepts form this chapter:
- Stretching your kids’ “helping muscles” must be ongoing, so make “helping others” a routine part of their childhood.
- A child who sees herself as altruistic is more likely to help others, because children act in ways that match their self-image. Help your child see herself as a helper. You might say, “We are a family that helps others.”
- Kids who are given regular opportunities to help and comfort others tend to become more helpful and compassionate.
- People who believe that empathy has the potential to grow are more likely to exert effort to empathize when it is needed most. Help your child recognize that empathy can be improved with practice and help him develop an empathetic growth mindset so he knows that traits like empathy, caring, kindness and courage can be developed.
- Kids tend to empathize with people they’re close to, so expand your child’s “Circle of Familiarity” to include those of different backgrounds and experiences.
There are so many great opportunities in our lives to make a difference. What perfect time to start as you are going into the summer with more time to focus on the inner growth of ourselves and our children.
Slow down, rest, have fun, and renew yourselves this summer – my wish for you.
