NESC Newsletter- DECEMBER
AN INNOVATIVE EDUCATION FOR A BETTER TOMORROW
NESC Wonder Lab
PK - 6th grade students from both elementary schools visited the Wonder Lab during the month of November. Students attended different sessions that encouraged them to practice executive functioning skills like: focus, planning and prioritizing, task initiation, impulse control, flexible thinking and many others.
Students participated in a Growth Mindset Escape Rooms, created 2D Lego Art, discovered new robots - Sphero, Lego Spike & We.Do, investigated Snap Circuits and manipulated different puzzles on OSMO. During these sessions students were encouraged to use their growth mindset - we learn from our mistakes and the power of YET!
The Wonder Lab is always looking for volunteers. No experience necessary - just a growth mindset to try new things! If you would be interested in volunteering, you may contact Gretchen Brown at browng@nesc.k12.in.us and more information will be provided.

Friendsgiving Thanksgiving!
The tradition returned during November with the Friendsgiving Thanksgiving at Northeast North. Students and staff were able to share a feast together of noodles, rolls, and other fixings during a fun afternoon. Grade levels shared poems and jokes to entertain the school. Additionally, each classroom selected their best “turkey strutter” and best “turkey gobbler” to participate in the contest on stage to win the best overall. Students cheered on all the winners. Of course, the biggest turkey of all was Mr. Chesterfield, our custodian! The day finished with everyone viewing A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving.
Veterans Day Ceremony
Veterans Day was celebrated at NENE with the Sullivan County Honor Guard explaining the meaning of each fold of our American flag. Sixth grader, Gabe Fowler, read about the history of Veterans Day. Wyatt Shanks led the school in the Pledge of Allegiance. The school listened to the story, “America’s White Table.” The story explained the all important symbolism of the POW/MIA table. Barbie Stuck and Kat McGee did the honor of setting the rose, plate, inverted cup, black napkin, lemon slice, and salt plate on the table. The table was placed at the foot of the school’s honor wall in the main hallway. The honor wall had pictures of students’ family and friends veterans that are loved by all. Students enjoyed looking at the pictures and writing messages like “hero” and “love” in the salt at the POW/MIA table.

Making a Difference!
NENE classes donated to the Salvation Army Red Kettle Campaign from November 14-21. Classes brought in dollars and change to help make a difference in our community. We are anxious to find out which class brought in the most money! Some of our Beta students braved the cold temperatures and rang the bell at Walmart to continue with the Red Kettle Campaign in late November. The Salvation Army Red Kettles can be found throughout the Earth during the holiday season. We encourage all to give what they can as it is a worthy cause.
Cultural Experience with Pamyua!
NENE students learned about Inuit culture on November 7 with a musical performance by the band Pamyua. Pamyua blends traditional Inuit music with contemporary genres. The band was visiting Sullivan County that week through a program hosted by Arts Midwest which is part of World Fest Tour.
“We are extremely lucky to have had this cultural experience offered to our students. The band shared stories through music that was fun and fascinating for our Thunderbirds,” said Mr. McCammon, fifth grade teacher.

Choose My Team!
NCHS Business Math students recently enjoyed playing the game, "Choose My Team," as they learned the positive actions and pitfalls that lead to work team success or disaster.
Annual Holiday Food Drive
The NCHS Student Council and the T-Bird Trainers have begun their Annual Holiday Food Drive. Students should bring non-perishable food items to NC to donate. The class (Senior, Junior, Sophomore, Freshmen, 8th Grade, & 7th Grade) that brings in the most donations will receive a movie day with pizza, popcorn and pop. Some donations will be used for our “We Care” closet, and all others will be donated to “Our Father’s Arms” of Sullivan County. The food drive will end December 9!
"I Decide For Me"
Speakers from the organization, Pregnancy Choices in Linton, Indiana, presented the "I Decide for Me" abstinence education program in the high school health classes. According to claritycares.org, IDFM "aids students in identifying long term goals and gives them concrete illustrations to achieve those goals. Media exposure and portrayal of relationships are analyzed. Teen pregnancy rates and sexually transmitted infection rates are discussed along with the immeasurable holistic consequences of intimacy outside of marriage. This program gives students hope for a solid, healthy future, regardless of past choices."
Cory Deschamp and Cole Thompson, along with Nurse Becky Jackson, were our guest presenters. The trio will return to NC second semester to present the IDFM program to the rest of the high school health classes as well as to all of the junior high health classes.
Pregnancy Choices is a 501c3 non-profit in the state of Indiana. Community support ensures their ability to meet the needs of local women and men facing unexpected pregnancies. They are 100% funded through the generosity of individuals, businesses, and organizations in the community. All donations are tax-deductible.
Pregnancy Choices empowers women and families facing unexpected pregnancies in Greene County Indiana and the surrounding counties. They provide accurate information, free services, and practical support with a holistic and compassionate approach. They give each of their clients the care and attention they need, empowering them to make informed decisions for themselves and their future. Winter Ball for Grades 6-8
North Central Junior High will host a “WINTER BALL” on Friday, December 16, 2022 from 6-8 PM.
This will be a “formal” dance for 7th and 8th graders as well as 6th grade students from NENE and NEEE. The cost is free and will include the a DJ, a photo booth, snacks, and drinks. All students must be a student of NESC to attend.
"We Care" Closet!
North Central Jr/Sr High School would like to introduce to our students, parents, and guardians our new “We Care” Closet. This idea originated at a teacher’s meeting in a discussion about our students' needs and developed into what we believe will be an amazing way for us to help our “kids." Because we care, we have created a “closet” that includes any item that they might need. Whether it is clothes, shoes, hygiene products, school supplies, or even food for snacks at school or weekends at home, we will have it all, and it is FREE!
With the help of some very generous donors, we hope to be able to fulfill the needs of all of our students, no matter what they are. If a student has a need, there are two ways they can make a request. Pictured is a card they can fill out and place in the box, both of which are located on the bulletin across from the main office. The other way is to use the link provided and fill out the Google Form. This information will be kept confidential and the student should choose, either on the card or on the Google Form, how they would like to receive the items they request. If a student has a need that is not listed, they may simply write it on the card or include it in the Google Form. Students may request items as often as they have a need. Once we get the request from the student, it should be filled within a couple days depending on inventory. Please do not be afraid to ask if you have a need - because we CARE!
