NEW: This Week's Message from Mr. Smith
Northwest High School Families,
Happy Super Bowl Sunday! We are looking forward to a full week ahead and more Black History Month celebrations. We will have Jag Paws this Wednesday, February 15. A reminder that there is no school next Monday, February 20 in observance of President's Day.
A reminder for students in grades 9-11! You can order your student photos by visiting vosphoto.com/uc. Use your student ID when prompted for the online code.
We are continuing to conduct regular hall sweeps. It is important that every student is on time and ready to learn at the beginning of every single class period. As has been noted in the previous newsletters, students will no longer receive warnings. Any student caught in a hall sweep will be assigned an after school detention.
Students who are interested in getting their learners permit, you will have the opportunity to take the Learners Permit test at Northwest on the afternoon of Tuesday, March 7 and Tuesday, April 18. The test will begin promptly at 2:30 in room 100. You should stop by the main office to pick up a permission slip.
Juniors can apply now to QuestBridge’s Prep Scholar Program (students must meet financial and academic requirements). Students who become Prep Scholars increase their chances of winning full QuestBridge Scholarships to college as seniors. The Prep Scholar application is due March 22nd. Interested in learning more? Please attend a lunch meeting in room 264 on Wednesday, February 22nd.
The annual Valentine's Day Puppy Kissing Booth event will take place at lunch in front of the Media Center on Tuesday, February 14th. Come get some puppy love and consider donating to local shelters. The event is completely free, but any donation is appreciated.

NEW: Mental Health Awareness and Suicide Prevention
Northwest High School’s school-based mental health staff will deliver a lesson to students about mental health awareness and suicide prevention during an English class in March. The lessons are from the Signs of Suicide (SOS) youth suicide prevention program that has demonstrated an improvement in students’ knowledge and adaptive attitudes toward suicide risk and depression. All students in Grades 9 through 12 will participate in a class lesson that includes video clips and/or discussion. After the lesson, students will fill out a form to let the school’s Student Well-being Team know if they would like to talk to someone to get help for themselves or a friend. Students will also receive a handout of school, local, and national resources available to support mental health needs. Families who would like to learn more about the Signs of Suicide program can attend the February 21st PTSA meeting, where members of the counseling department will share information about suicide prevention and the plans for student lessons. If you have any questions or concerns about this program, please do not hesitate to contact your student’s counselor at 240-740-7080.
NEW: Maryland State School Survey
Maryland requires that all public schools survey students about school climate as a part of our accountability system. The purpose of the survey is to gain valuable information about the quality and character of the learning environment in each school so that they can promote a climate that supports student learning. Northwest High School students in grades 9 through 11 will take the survey in their Social Studies classes between March 20th through March 31st. The survey will take about 30 minutes and will ask students about topics such as student engagement, interactions with adults and with other students in the school, the school environment, bullying, and safety. The survey will not ask about a student’s personal experiences and will not ask the student to provide any information that might violate his or her privacy. For more information about the Maryland State survey, please read the memo linked here.

NEW: Athletics and Activities Calendar for the Week of February 13 - February 19
REMINDER: Spring Sports Registration!
Registration for Spring sports is open in ParentVue! Don't wait to register your student! Students must have a current physical in order to participate in tryouts starting March 1st. Forms are available on the MCPS website, NorthwestAthletics.org, or at school. Physicals are good for 1 calendar year. The deadline to register is February 27th. Our Athletics Specialist, Mrs. Tyler, will be sending out emails confirming students are approved for tryouts or their registration is pending. This information will also be posted outside her office across from the gym so students can check their status as well. If you don't get an email or their name isn't on the list, then the student is NOT registered for a spring sport. Please direct all questions to Mrs. Tyler at Jody_D_Tyler@mcpsmd.org. More information about registration can be found at NorthwestAtheletics.org (click on the MORE tab) or check out this helpful video from MCPS: https://youtu.be/6f3Yw0SYu6w. Information about times and locations for Tryouts will be posted on the website in the coming weeks. We can't wait to see our spring athletes in action!
REMINDER: Free Store Update!
Thank you Northwest Community for all of your donations to the Free Store! We average several visitors a day, and as the new semester begins, students are looking for replacement school supplies for those that have worn out. As always, we accept all gently used school supplies, such as paper and binders, but right now we are in particular need of pencils, test prep books, and backpacks--especially backpacks. Cute trinkets are always welcome to make shopping at the Free Store an especially fun experience. Please drop off donations in the front office or have your child bring them to room 264. Thank you!
REMINDER: Northwest Earns AP Computer Science Award!
Northwest High School's Computer Science Department was just awarded College Board's Female Diversity Award for achieving high female representation in AP Computer Science Principles. Female students who take APCSP are more than five times as likely to major in computer science in college.
Providing female students with access to computer science courses is critical to ensuring gender parity in the industry’s high-paying jobs and to driving innovation, creativity, and representation. The median annual wage for computer and information technology occupations was $97,430 in May 2021. See Mr. Sell in Room 104 with any questions about taking a computer science course next year at Northwest.
REMINDER: African Student Association African Ball

REMINDER: School Cash Online Registration and PIN Information (Important for AP Exams)
MCPS has transitioned to a new online payments system called SchoolCash Online (SCO). This will be the preferred method of payment for all school-related fees, excluding school lunches. SCO will help increase efficiency and security at schools by making payments directly into schools’ bank accounts and eliminating the need for teachers to handle money. A processing fee will be included on all items available for purchase, regardless of the type of payment used on SCO or at the school. Parents/guardians can register for an SCO account here. When adding students to your account, you will be asked for the student PIN number. This PIN number is not the student ID. Parents/guardians should have received the PIN via email from scopinprocess@mcpsmd.org in early August and then again in early September. If you need support with the registration process or adding your student(s), please email MCPS’ community support drop box at communitytechsupport@mcpsmd.org. Each class sits in a designated section at the rallies so make an impact for YOUR CLASS by wearing your grade level color and make your presence known! Although participation with wearing class colors is optional, we hope you will join in the FUN!
The grade level colors are as follows:
Freshmen (Grade 9): YELLOW
Sophomores (Grade 10): GREEN
Juniors (Grade 11): RED
Seniors (Grade 12): BLUE
You can wear any clothing and/or accessories in your assigned color as long as you adhere to the school dress code. You can opt to wear clothing that you already own in your grade level color, you can purchase a shirt from the PTSA/Booster Club website for $8: http://www.nwhsptsa.org/shop (available sizes and quantities are limited), or you can purchase a T-shirt in your color at Michael's or Joanne's (the cost is usually around $5) and personalize with fabric markers or paint pens! The possibilities are endless to show your #JagPride!
