Falco January 25th - 29th
2021 Newsletter for Five Oaks and Rachel Carson MS
A LETTER FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Falcon Families,
We are in the home stretch of the first semester! It’s amazing to think the year is almost half over (or amazing to think it’s only almost half over…)! There are some cool things happening for our students including:
Virtual site visits for RC students
An on site museum exhibit in front of our building - see our very own Ms. Inglett and students in a video here
The Falcon News Club under the leadership of Mr. Balzer and Mr. Foren took over the FNN this past week with many more episodes to come!
The Culinary Club with Mr. Martin continues to wow us with their incredible gourmet creations (although I’m sad we’re not in person to taste everything!)
Students in Ms. Peterson’s class got to create their own political cartoons all about historical events from long ago
Ms. Zomerman continues to get more and more Falcons to read via weekly “Read with Force” videos.
This is just a short list of the incredible things happening every week in our virtual learning experience. While it hasn’t been what any of us imagined for this year, our staff and students have exceeded all expectations and continue to find creative ways to connect and learn new skills!
Starting this week we will be offering time for students to come to tutoring sessions hosted by some of our staff and run by students from Westview HS. The high school students are volunteering their time to help FOMS/RC students with their assignments and questions on classwork! I’m very excited about the chance for our students to interact with their high school peers, and to see what leadership can look like when they’re older. More information is forthcoming - stay tuned!
Have a great week and as always please reach out with any questions or comments kelly_cox@beaverton.k12.or.us

CARTA DE LA DIRECTORA
Familias Falcon,

Parents and Guardians:
Our registrar began notifying you of needed immunizations starting in September. Please get the immunizations done at your provider's office and return the completed paperwork to the school.
On January 13th, Washington County Health Department was sent a list of students who are not up to date. The County will send you an exclusion notice. Your child will not be excluded from CDL but when we do return to in person learning, your student will not be able to attend until they are up to date and the school has received written notice.
Absences for exclusion are considered unexcused. It can be very difficult to get an appointment with a provider for several weeks before exclusion so please get this done now! It is also the perfect time to get a flu shot for your child if you have not already done so.

How do I know if a news story is biased?
A librarian’s job is to make sure students know how to tell bias in information sources. Without teacher-librarians in the district, sometimes this lesson is missed. Luckily, there are vetted sites to tell you where to find bias in a news story. Check out AllSides and make sure the information you are sharing is factual.

Important Attendance Note: Students may not call in their absences on the attendance line, it must be the parent or guardian. Same with email, the student can notify the teacher that they will be missing a class, but the parent/guardian must call the attendance line 503-356-2601 to notify attendance of the excused absence.
Unlike last spring, student attendance will count during Comprehensive Distance Learning. Please read the following guidance on how attendance will be tracked:
Teachers will take student attendance daily. Attendance may be counted in a variety of ways to accommodate families who may need to access instruction during different times of the day.
Attending a live teacher-led session
Watching a teacher-recorded video
Interacting with a teacher via email
Posting completed coursework online
Parent/guardian notifications will be sent out at approximately 5 p.m. each day if students haven’t engaged in their school work and have been marked as absent.
Each morning, teachers will access an attendance report and will reconcile any absences from the previous day with any new evidence of engagement during the evening.
Please call the attendance line at 503-356-2601 if your student will be missing school due to illness or medical appointments.
