What's Happening at JAMS
Week of March 1, 2021
Hello JAMS Families!
It’s hard to believe we are entering March. Hopefully the spring will bring a shift in this pandemic toward a new day. As I look at the survey data for reopening, it looks like this:
Likely Returning: 70%
Likely NOT Returning: 20%
Undecided: 10%
The DL + survey is still open. The more information we have, the smoother this transition will go.
With that being said, it is important to understand that our DL+ model seeks to address the Social Emotional Learning needs that are a product of the pandemic. Our kids' interactions with others have significantly diminished over the past year. When you don’t practice a skill, it weakens. For example, if a basketball player doesn’t practice free throws for a year, they likely would decline in shooting percentage. If you don’t practice social-emotional skills (checking in; asking questions; being curious about others; showing empathy) you also will experience loss in this capacity. So, as we plan for DL+ we will design experiences to address the social-emotional domain.
Weekly Schedule
Here's what's happening this week/Próximos eventos:
- Thursday March 4th, School Board Meeting, 5:30PM
Distance Learning/Aprendizaje a distancia:
Reopening is such a fluid topic right now. To date, the average daily case rate is 12.3 cases/100,000 people/day. We are very close to reaching the 7/100,000/day we need to be redesignated into the Red Tier. Once we reach the Red Tier criteria for five (5) days, we are then able to bring stable cohorts of kids back on campus. Per our District/CTA MOU, there is also a stipulation whereby the vaccination must be available for 15 days prior to reopening. So we are getting closer to bringing kids back. Expect more definitive information in the coming weeks.
Google Classroom for Parents/Google Classroom para padres:

Counselor Tip/Recomendaciones de los consejeros: Grief and Loss
Many people are experiencing grief during the COVID-19 pandemic. Grief is a normal reaction to loss during or after a disaster or other traumatic event. Grief can happen in response to the death of someone we care about or from drastic changes in daily routines and ways of life that usually bring us comfort and a feeling of stability. Children may show grief differently than adults. Some signs to look for in your child are: changes in behavior such as acting out or shutting down; loss of interest in daily activities; changes in eating and/or sleeping habits; or persistent anxiety, sadness, or depression. Below are some helpful tips to help your child cope.
Talk with your child about how they are feeling.
Allow your child to grieve by giving them time to talk and let them express their thoughts and feelings in creative ways.
Practice self-care with your child (e.g., mindfulness, breathing exercises, journaling, etc.)
Spend time with your child and partake in activities they enjoy (e.g., coloring, reading, walking, sports, etc.)
