Mrs. Loppnow's News & Notes
Week of September 25, 2017
A Note from Mrs. Loppnow:
Thank you for supporting our first class reward day by sending in your devices today. The students enjoyed "technology time" (see below for a few photos) and are motivated to earn their next reward day. The "ante" is upped, however, and the students are now working on earning THIRTY compliments. I know they can do it!
I hope you all enjoy your weekend!

A Peek into this week and next!
Writer's Workshop: This week's mentor text was My Rotten Red-Headed Older Brother by Patricia Polacco. Our focus was on adding adjectives and also on identifying SUBJECT and PREDICATES within sentences. An easy way to remember this is to ask...WHO?? (This is the subject.) . DID WHAT??? (This is the predicate.) . The class had a lot of fun creating their own silly sentences with a shared post-it activity.
Next week we will take a break from Mentor Sentences and will focus our learning on the Paragraph of the Week. Students will learn, with guided practice, what makes a paragraph a paragraph!
Content: Mindset...Fixed or Growth? This week we continued to talk about accepting feedback, both compliments and criticisms. We also discussed what happens when we have a setback. We read an awesome book titled The Most Magnificent Thing by Ashley Spires that showed a perfect example of dealing with setbacks. We ended the week creating GEAR HEADS which show what the kids imagine happens inside our brains when we are given feedback, experience a setback, or make a mistake. See below for a few examples of finished products!
Reader's Workshop: This week we began work on our first Reading benchmark and learned to identifying the differences between stories, dramas, and poems. It was fun to hear a 3rd graders perspective on what a "drama" is! For our purposes, a drama refers to a written "script" such as one used for a play or movie. Below you can see the anchor chart we created to show the difference between the three.
Next week we will study a folktale from our Junior Great Books collection titled Ooka and the Honest Thief. Students will participate in a socratic circle and will learn how to respond to others thinking.

REMINDERS & REQUESTS:
- PROJECT GO will be on October 10th. Students are asked to bring an "old favorite" t-shirt to school for this project. They will be turning it into a pillow with the help of our Project Go sewing experts (NOT Mrs. Loppnow!), and the grandparents who are able to join us. Please do not send adult-sized shirts! You may start sending in your t-shirts on Monday. Please have all shirts here by Thursday!
- During PROJECT GO, we offer snacks for our Grandparent volunteers. I am looking for (food) volunteers who would be willing to send in the following on October 10th: Meat and cheese plate, crackers . Please let me know if you are able to help out. Thank you to Kathleen D. for signing up to bring coffee!
- CODING!!! Thank you to Jesse K. for volunteering to be our "Coding Guru" this year!
- BOOK LOGS: Many parents have been asking about Rocky's Reading Log...Students have been recording in two different ways. 1. Record pages read every night, or 2. Record the book upon completion. Next month's log will look a little different and will have clearer expectations. Thank you for your patience!
