Pearl Harbor Attack

What happened?

The Pearl Harbor base in Hawaii was attacked on December 7th, 1941. It was attacked by Japanese torpedo and bomber planes. The explosions were heard to be huge. On December 6 the U.S. President Franklin Roosevelt tries to make peace with the Emperor of Japan. There was no reply from the Emperor. The attacks were commanded by Admiral Nagumo. There was 423 planes totala about to attack at 6 a.m. The first attack had 183 Japanese planes. The second wave had 167 planes and was heading for Pearl Harbor. Pearl Harbor was not in high alert so they was not ready for the attack. The first attack was aimed at airfields and battleships. The second attacked were aimed at the ships.

The Stuff Lost

Eight battleships are damaged, with five sunk. Three light cruisers, three destroyers and three smaller vessels are lost along with 188 aircraft. The Japanese lost 27 planes and five small submarines which attempted to go through the inner harbor and launch torpedoes.

The causalties

The casualties were 2,335 servicemen and 68 civilians killed, with 1,178 wounded. 1,104 men aboard the Battleship USS Arizona killed after a 1,760-pound air bomb went into the forward magazine causing catastrophic explosions
