Mrs. Pfister's Weekly Update

Classroom Learning
Spelling
Weekly spelling test. Next list: Unit 3 week 4
This week we worked on main idea and supporting details. A main idea is a sentence. It is what the text is mostly about. Believe it or not, this is a difficult skill. Main idea is often confused with topic, details or theme so we do look as all those skills at the same time to see the differences. We will continue working on main idea next week.
Science
We have moved on to physical science. We are learning about atoms, elements, states of matter, molecules, and compounds.
Socials Studies
We are learning about Colonial America. We have almost concluded the Southern Colonies. I have been teaching different note taking strategies and we have practiced talking about the topic with our notes. Chapter 7 test will be late next week. I am planning for Thursday.
Writing
Compare and contrast is our writing skill. This week we learned how to compare and contrast with a double T Chart and not the typical Venn Diagram. We discovered the importance of using commonalities (subtopics) to help us stay organized with our thoughts.
Report Cards and Reports
One Word 2020
We all choose one word to focus on for 2020. Ask your child about their word. Maybe you can pick one too and share it with your child?
