Curriculum Highlights
Math-We will begin Topic 8 this week. This topic introduces concepts of place value. We will make numbers from 11-19, we will examine numbers made with tens, and we will count with groups of tens and leftovers.
Social Studies-This week we will continue a Social Studies unit on American Symbols. We will discover, research, and learn about the many symbols that are an important pat of our country's identity.
First Grade Celebrates Hour of Code
The Hour of Code is a movement that reaches students allover the world in 180+ countries. It’s an introduction to computer science and computer programming. The event takes place in December every year.
Mayfield’s Hour of Code (always in January) is schedule for the week of 1/30/17 and includes students in grade 1-8. This is the first year students in 1st grade will participate in the school-wide Hour of Code.
On Monday, 1/30 1st grade students will have the chance to do three different coding activities (one in each classroom and then rotate). The children will:
- Participate in the official Hour of Code coding activities at learn.code.org
- Learn to code using an OSMO device. OSMO teaches logic skills and problem solving. In this activity, students will use command tiles to help an creature named Abbie eat strawberries.
- Play a board game called Robot Turtles. By exploring the world of Beep, students learn about functions.
Love Grams
Love Grams are a great way to tell someone you really care! It's easy to send one to your best friends, your teachers, or your school family members - just print out the form below for each order and turn it in to the envelope in your homeroom/advisory with cash or checks made out to "Mayfield Junior School." Orders are due on or before Friday, February 10, and will be distributed at the end of the day on Tuesday, February 14. All proceeds go to Reach Out.
The Casa Libre/Freedom Home is a project of the Center for Human Rights and Constitutional Law, Inc. It is a licensed emergency and long-term 14-bed shelter for minors under the age of 18 without homes, including unaccompanied immigrant and refugee children. The program offers a range of services, including case management, educational testing and placement, referrals to no-cost health care providers, drug and alcohol prevention programs, family reunification services, living skills and leadership workshops, free legal and immigration services, and cultural activities. The program focuses on Los Angeles inner-city homeless children, and has a history of providing services to immigrant and refugee children, including unaccompanied minors.

Wednesday-Journal-This week we read a story called Buster. The story was full of surprises! Write about a time when you were surprised. You should be able to write at least 3 sentences. Please remember to illustrate your writing, too.
Thursday-Catch up night! Please complete any unfinished work from the week. If there isn't anything in your folder, please take some time to review the spelling words. With the extra time you will have, find something FUN to do-play outside, read a favorite book, play a favorite game, the possibilities are endless!
