RHS Gym Update
Construction updates and fall sports schedule changes
Construction begins June 8; some fall sports schedules changed
(June 1, 2015) Construction on the Roseburg High School Stewart W. Robertson Memorial Gymnasium begins June 8.
The Adroit Construction Company will begin mobilizing and staging for summer work by taking down awards banners and removing bleachers and other equipment during the last week classes are in session.
The project is expected to last from June 8 through mid- to late November 2015.
Preparatory work will not interrupt classes or practices during the week of June 8-12 (the last day of class for students is June 12); however, a few nearby classrooms beginning June 15 through Sept. 10. Volleyball practice and games will be relocated during construction. Construction is planned to be completed before winter sports begin and district staff will notify athletes’ families and coaching staff first of any changes to that schedule.
Most fall sports, P.E. classes and extracurricular activities that normally use the main gym will be temporarily relocated to other sites around campus, like the Auxiliary Gymnasium, but otherwise unchanged. All public access to this gym will be open from the east side of campus between the Heritage Building and tennis courts through Sept. 10, when construction work moves inside the main gym. Quad access to campus sites around and near the main gym will be limited for safety from June 15 to Sept. 10.
Summer camps, workouts and season practice and games for outdoor field sports, like football and soccer, will be unaffected. Summer volleyball camp will be located in the Auxiliary Gym. When classes begin in the fall, large school events, like assemblies and Homecoming, will be planned for outside at Finlay Field during fair weather and relocated to other campus locations during rain.
RHS volleyball practice and the game schedule will be changed for the 2015 season. Most varsity volleyball games will be held at Umpqua Community College’s gymnasium, though some UCC scheduled home games will be moved to other sites, TBA.
The RHS athletic department is in touch with team coaches, athletes and parents to alert them of all planned and unplanned changes to fall sports practice and game schedules. RHS Athletics and Roseburg Public Schools will keep district staff, parents and community updated on construction progress at least monthly and as needed.

In January, Roseburg High School received a $1.5 million grant to make necessary seismic updates to our Stewart W. Robertson Memorial Gymnasium. The funds come from Business Oregon’s Infrastructure Finance Authority seismic rehabilitation grant program. The work will replace and upgrade the gym roof, HVAC system and floor to current building standards. The gym was built 1952. The state grant is part of an effort to rehabilitate critical public buildings, particularly public schools and emergency services facilities, to current seismic codes. Such facilities, like our RHS gym, would be key for community recovery in the event of a major earthquake or other emergency for use by first or emergency responders or as temporary shelter sites for displaced people.
Roseburg High School leadership is proud of our well-maintained facilities, grateful for the opportunity to upgrade facilities for all public use and thankful to the community for its patience and flexibility as we move forward with this necessary campus construction.
