Congratulations Ms. Stephanie Stefanik !
BCPS Outstanding Teacher Leader in Gifted & Talented Education
Team Mays!
More great news! The Maryland Gifted and Talented Advisory Council, has selected Stephanie Stefanik as the awardee of the Outstanding Teacher as Leader in Gifted and Talented Education Award. Well before Ms. Stefanik joined our Mays Chapel team, she recognized her calling in advocacy for accelerated academics. Beyond high quality instruction and leadership in supporting her colleagues in advanced academics, the cornerstone of her advocacy is centered on creating equitable access to rigorous, engaging instruction to ALL students at high level. Stephanie has been invited to participate in a virtual awards ceremony being held on Wednesday, February 23, 2022, at 6:00 PM. Please join me in sending a mighty "PAWS UP" for her achievement through EGATE (Excellence in Gifted and Talented Education).

MAKING HISTORY EVERY DAY
“Black people make and have made history every single day, not just February and not just slavery/civil rights,” says Brendan Penn, magnet coordinator, Woodmoor Elementary School, and BCPS Teacher of the Year 2018-2019.
In this blog post, Penn brings attention to a few not-so-commonly shared Black history profiles and stories. Information in this blog post comes from a Black History Month calendar Penn created for his school. (The full calendar can be found on Penn's Twitter account, @MrPenn31.)

Black Excellence Program
This year our Black Saga program has a new name and make over! Black Saga is now known as Black Excellence. This annual Mays Chapel club program begins mid-October and continues through February which is Black History month. This is an extra-curricular program that focus’ on What happened in the past, how students are connected to those in the past, and how the perspective that students have about their own life experiences are viewed as part of the larger human story across time.
There are three components to this program. Students may choose to take part in all the components of the program or choose which component is more important for them to explore. These components include: a book study, a competition, and a presentation. Through this study of history, students will answer the questions: What does “Lifting Liberty” mean to you? and how am I connected to those in the past?
Interested in learning about how you can get involved next year? Look for flyers in the fall or reach out to Ms. Shannon Fisher sfisher9@bcps.org
100th Day of School Celebration
Mays Cafe
The office of food and nutrition services will upgraded our on-premise system for all cafeteria transactions. The new system will be launched here at the Mays Cafe starting February 28th. All students will be assigned a unique pin number that students will input to receive their daily free lunch. At this time, we will not be offering snacks or other items for purchase.
Your students will soon receive a piece of paper with a picture of the pin pad and their unique pin number. Please help your child practice entering their pin on the picture of the pin pad. Thank you for your support in making this a smooth transition to the new system.
CONGRATULATIONS MS. COUNSELL - MARYLAND ELEMENTARY SCHOOL COUNSELOR OF THE YEAR
"If you are ever feeling sad or scared or nervous about anything, that you should go talk to the school counselor . . . because the school counselor will make everything better." -- A Mays Chapel student
Baltimore County Public Schools invites students in Grades 3-12, parents/guardians, staff, and community members to participate in the school system’s annual Stakeholder Climate Survey. The brief online survey is available on the BCPS website from January 31 through Friday, March 4, 2022. The survey is available in multiple languages. Information from this survey will help BCPS understand how to best support all stakeholders and to improve student and organizational performance. The survey feedback is also used by schools to refine School Progress Plans as well as by BCPS to measure progress toward goals in The Compass strategic plan.
Grade 3 CogAT Reports Available
All Grade 3 students in Baltimore County Public Schools took the Cognitive Ability Test (CogAT) prior to winter break. The CogAT is an online assessment consisting of three sub-tests: verbal, quantitative, and non-verbal reasoning. The data provided by the CogAT, along with additional data collected throughout the school year, will be used by schools as part of the universal screening process completed in the spring to identify students as Gifted and Talented (GT) in English Language Arts and/or Mathematics.
Grade 3 students will be bringing the CogAT Student Profile Narrative report home the week of February 14, 2022. This report provides you with your student’s overall score and scores for each sub-test, along with an explanation of how to interpret the results. If you have questions regarding the results after you have received the Student Profile Narrative, you may contact your school’s administration.
