Meet the New Principal
If you are new at Malibu so is our principal, Mrs. Harris. Our principal, Mrs. Harris, has previously worked as a teacher at Granby Elementary in Norfolk and Holland Elementary in Virginia Beach. She has also been an assistant principal at Salem Elementary and Christopher Farms Elementary. So actually, Malibu is her first school as a principal.
When asked what she likes most about Malibu, Mrs. Harris, said, “The kids, the teachers, and her office.” She feels the school is off to a great start. When I asked her about the first day of school she said, “On September 5th when the students came everything changed.” The school finally came to life. The one thing she would like to see to make Malibu even better is more innovations. She wants to see the students develop their creativity along with the teachers.

Meet the New Assistant Principal
Who’s the man with the flat top, the deep voice, and the red Marine baseball cap? Our new assistant principal, Mr. Dickerson! When Mr. Dickerson was a little kid he wanted to be in the military, and he was. He was a marine for twenty years before becoming a teacher. Mr. Dickerson cares for the safety of everyone at Malibu. Everyone may think he is strict, but it’s really because he wants us all to be safe.
Mr. Dickerson believes in collaboration between students, teachers, and everybody else. He is interested in helping the teachers and students learn about technology.
Mr. Dickerson likes being an assistant principal because he can help schools and people.

Who's NEW in P.E.?
Screaming students, balls flying, running feet all mean one thing. It’s PE time. The Malibu gym has a new PE teacher, Mr. Barbarisi! Mr. Barbaisi attended Old Dominion University. He became a PE teacher because he knew other PE teachers. He decided he would be a good teacher. Before coming to Malibu he was a PE assistant at Kings Grant Elementary.
Mr. Barbaris loves to play volleyball, however, his favorite sport to watch is football. . . Go Ravens!

Our Leader in Technology
Do you know the head tech coach in our school? And, do you know technology can be used to do great things in our world? Read here to learn more about how Mr. Trask can use technology for the good of our world. Many of us may know Mr. Trask already because he may have been in your class to teach you about technology. You may have noticed Mr. Trask loves what he does and this is how he started. For instance you may not know Mr. Trask wants to build a machine that can help students stand up to bullies. Something he said was, “I want to help stop bullies so I want to make a machine that will help out.” That’s not the only thing, he wants to make a flying car that has a built in nacho dispenser. As you can see Mr. Trask has a sense of humor.

Grade Level Reports
What's Been Going on in 4th and 5th Grade?
What has grade 5 been up to so far this year? The students in fifth grade just finished the Virginia Regions. They learned that there are five regions. They studied the products, the industries, and the geography. They also have made catapults to apply Newton’s Law. Soon they will be making cars when learning about motion. But perhaps the most excitement they’ve had so far this year is a field trip to the Air Show. The students that they will begin to take their Cromebooks home soon.
The fourth grade students just finished learning about the solar system. They are learning about the elements of fiction. In math they just learned how to round a number. They are using Flip Grid, which is how to make a video about what they are learning. They are also using Quizlet during class.

Making Friends Takes Work!
How to Make Friends
As we are growing, we are either losing friends or making friends. Some people struggle making friends by being shy, nervous, or maybe they just like being by themselves. Although you may realize you need someone by your side, like a friend, someone who understands you. So . . . here a few tips on making friends.
#1 Put Yourself Out There
Don’t be afraid to start a conversation or sit next to someone new at lunch. Try finding out their interests and things they think are fun. If you find you are pretty similar, then move to step two.
#2 Be Nice
You want a friend that’s nice and caring. So don’t be mean. Remember always treat people how you want to be treated. So don’t be mean. If you are, then your potential friend will probably walk away or ignore you. After that if everything is good smoothly then go to number three.
#3 Have Your Friend’s Back
Don’t just watch if someone is being picked in. It is important to stick up for your friends. This will build trust and that’s super important. It would almost be impossible for them not to be your friend.
#4 Do Something They Like Doing
Maybe play with them at PE doing Four Square or even go to their sport games and support them.
#5 Staying in Touch
#5 is possibly the most important one. When summer is here or the week-ends come and you are not in school anymore, you need to make time to see each other or talk.
Hopefully these tricks will get you the most perfect friend you have ever met. Just follow these steps and you’ll be heading down the right path.
