Mrs. Shields' Weekly Update
1st Grade Ireland Elementary
The last school week of 2019 is here!
Here is what is happening in Room 140 this week!
While we don't have a spelling test or homework card, we will continue to check our end of semester skills. We are going to spend a little extra time on our reading skills from last week since it was crazy with me being out Monday and Tuesday and a lot of illnesses trickling in.
This week is going to be a crazy fun week with emphasis on both crazy and fun!
We will be decorating our Gingerbread Houses, finishing up our Christmas presents for you, and will also have our Christmas Party and festivities on Friday. Don't forget a special visitor will also be coming on Thursday! In between all of the festivities, we will practice writing our numbers to 120, tens and ones, writing complete sentences, reading our sight words and leveled texts, and math facts.
Also, our Santa letters are ready to go! I will be dropping those off at the post office on Monday. Please look for a response in the mail. Santa's helpers have promised a response to all letters received by December 21st! I have provided the North Pole with each student's home address.
Our Learning Goals for this week
- Read and spell words with long i, silent e (i_e) spelling pattern
- Understand Tens and Ones in two-digit numbers
- Assess first 100 Sight Words
- Math Facts 6-10 (pink scoops)
- Write an opening, closing, and fact sentence
REMINDER: Gift Exchange
PLEASE FEEL BE SURE TO SEND YOUR GIFT IN BY THE 16TH.
CANVAS
I have added a button below for our online learning management system, Canvas. Canvas is the tool that we use to access all online learning platforms in the classroom. It is used district wide by all of GJCS students. The kids have used it in class to practice skills. You can access it at home as well. Students username and password are their usual numbers that we use each and everyday in the classroom, and at lunch. They should definitely have memorized these by this point in the year. If you find they have not, please let me know and I will send their information home in their green folder. Please help them memorize this information as it will follow them throughout their entire career at GJCS.
Within Canvas, you will find an announcement section where I will post this and future newsletters, announcements, and other information in addition to sending the links by email. Please feel free to explore the links in Canvas. I will assign relevant videos, games, and learning opportunities weekly. Especially important is the CLEVER link in blue along the left side of the screen. Clicking on it will provide you access to Xtra Math, iReady, ABCya, Dance Mat Typing and many more.
This system will be the vehicle that we will eventually use for E-Learning days/snow days should we institute them district wide. It is important that your child be familiar with navigating this platform. As I mentioned, we have been using it in the classroom for quite some time now so they should all be familiar with it.
As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please contact me. Have a great week!
