Engaging Students with Poverty in Mind- Chapter 2: The Rules for Engagement ( TSI Focus Reading)
Synopsis: This chapter reveals the 5 core rules for engagement that will help you build a foundation for success.
The 5 Rules for Engagement:
- Upgrade your Attitude
- Build Relationships and Respect:
- Get Buy-In
- Embrace Clarity
- Show Your Passion
Over the last few weeks we dove a little deeper into the 1st four rules. This week we are going to explore rule 5!
Rule 5: Show Your Passion
- This rule relates to the most powerful form of communication...Nonverbal Communication!
- Let your students see your passion for teaching
- Be excited to come to work every day...or at least let the kids see and feel that.
Solutions You Can Use:
- Stay Active: Move around your classroom
- Vary Your Voice Purposefully: Vary your tone and adjust your volume and add pauses
- Keep Your Eyes Focused on Students: Make eye contact with the students
- Be Positive: Focus on what you want to happen...not the negatives!
Leading like LeBron James- Good article for all of us to reflect.
Math Updates:
Reading Updates:
The focus was writing. We visited 10 classrooms.
8/10 had effective mini lessons including I do, we do, you do.
8/10 conferred with students either individually or in a small group.
9/10 provided students with opportunities to share.
Please continue to have your students use the checklist so they are aware of the expectations.
It was nice to see how your readers have grown!
Please let your Literacy Team know how we can support you.
Social & Emotional Updates:
Second Grade Team
Thank you for having your portfolios ready for me at your portfolio peeks! The portfolios exceeded expectations! You all did a wonderful job gathering and recording artifacts to advocate for your students.
From the Principal's Desk
I am excited about our 1st SIT Meeting of the 2nd Quarter. We have celebrations and considerations. The meeting will be an opportunity for you to dive deep in our data and discuss ways we can consistency improve our instruction and support our community. Our focus will be:
- ESSA Houses ( quick overview)
- Benchmark Data
- F & P
- Attendance and Social /Emotional
I will provide snacks for your enjoyment.
Supporting you with behavior
"What we say and how we say it matters". I know that student behaviors can be frustrating at times. We want the best for all our students and sometimes our students impact your classroom culture. We must be mindful of what we say when are dealing with challenging behaviors. For example, we need to change our language and communication. See below:
- Explain the disruption away from the child. Don't allow the student to "take you there" or get involve in a power struggle( YOU will lose every time) Remember you are the adult with years of training, stay calm and let's talk through the situation. We are not a " you must come and get him school", we are a PLC that focuses on student needs and supporting teachers. Always keep your cool, relax, stay calm and you will be supported. Additionally, think about your next steps, because the student will be coming back to your classroom at some point. Students can't learn from main office.
- Don't take it personally. Classroom disruptions are the result of a student's response to being asked to do something that they can't mentally or academically complete at that time. Our goal is to problem solve and bring the gap to give them the tools to complete what is needed. That is a process that takes time and results in reflective questions:
1. Does the student have a CDM Plan?
2. Have I met with the parent and explained the need for a partnership? " I am trying to support your child, but I need your advice". ( different conversation than a " call home", this will also provide a different result)
3. Buddy System- use your team for support.
Have a great 3rd Quarter.. You are doing amazing work..
