Weekly Junior High Update
November 30, 2018
Thank you OI Junior High families, scholars, and staff!
As November comes to a close, Ms. Daniels and I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the families, scholars, and staff members that help us create a positive and supportive community at the junior high campus. Too often in today’s society, people are divided, focused on the negative, and judgemental of each other - quick to focus on faults instead of strengths. One of the things Ms. Daniels and I love most about our school and our OI community is how many families, scholars, and staff members we have that show love and support for each other on a daily basis. To have such a positive culture is unique and all too often uncommon or difficult to find in other schools. On our junior high campus, we strive to work together towards a common goal, however, each member of our community has their own personal challenges to overcome along the way. We aren’t perfect, no school ever is, but we are so appreciative of each and every scholar, parent, and staff member that actively contributes to helping us build a positive and supportive school community. Thank you, from the bottom of our hearts, to each and every one of you that contribute to helping us build an environment where each of our scholars and staff members feels supported and encouraged on a regular basis!! We are so proud and humbled to be part of such a caring community!! Thank you!!!
World Kindness Day
Tuesday, November 13th was World Kindness Day. Ms. Jackson discussed the importance of spreading kindness on this day and everyday. You never know what the person next to you may be going through so one small act can make a huge difference in the life of others. How are you encouraging your scholar to spread kindness?
Seeing through their eyes
So often, many of us take the simple blessings of life for granted. In a cross-curricular unit between our 7th grade I&S and L&L classes, scholars have been gaining a global view of the struggles families all over the world experience on a daily basis. Many families have become refugees, fleeing war torn or unsafe areas in a search for a better life for their families. 7th grade scholars work to understand the perspective of a refugee by creating a journal detailing the feelings and experiences of a refugee. We encourage you to ask your scholar what they have learned in this amazing unit!
Taking a stand
We want our scholars to learn they have a voice and that their voice can be powerful. We also want scholars to become comfortable standing up for themselves and what they believe in. In order to help them along this path, 8th grade scholars study images of important figures throughout history standing up for what they believe in, taking action to support a cause. Scholars then come together to discuss the importance of taking a stand.
Produce on Wheels Without Waste
The next POWWOW event will be this Saturday, 12/8 from 8:00-11:00. Get 60 pounds of fresh produce for $12!! Please see attached flyer for details.
Thank you Officer Lumadue!
In an effort to help our traffic run more smoothly, Officer Lumadue will be directing traffic as often as possible before and after school. Thank you to everyone that is being vigilant and complying with his directions. When he is out in the intersection helping, his directions take precedence over the posted stop sign. Please see the specific statute below:
28-622. Failure to comply with police officer; classification
A. A person shall not wilfully fail or refuse to comply with any lawful order or direction of a police officer invested by law with authority to direct, control or regulate traffic.
B. A person who violates this section is guilty of a class 2 misdemeanor.

Collaboration
Collaboration is a crucial skill for scholars to strengthen so that they will be able to work successfully with others throughout their lives. Teachers focus on this ATL skill on a regular basis in order to help scholars learn the importance of give and take when working with others.
Investigation
Scholars used the scientific method to test the various PH levels of different types of water. They hypothesized on which types of water would have a lower/higher PH and what factors may attribute to various PH levels.
Solar Ovens
6th grade scholars have been learning about the different types of heat transfer. As a culmination to this unit, they get to put their knowledge to the test by building a solar oven. They then put their ovens to the test to see if they can cook smores using a variety of heat transfer methods.
