ONLINE LEARNING TO BEGIN APRIL 6TH
Dear Oak Ridge Schools Families,
I hope you and your family are well and you have found some extra opportunities to rest during this abnormal Spring Break. We have been working daily to prepare for the unknown, and are hoping our families and students will benefit greatly from the efforts our teachers will be pouring into creating resources for the remainder of our school year.
While I know that online learning cannot replace the power of face-to-face instruction or the effectiveness of teacher relationships with students, I feel very fortunate that we have quality staff who will still offer support to students in a work-from-home model. We will transition slowly with simple extended learning opportunities, knowing we cannot fully replicate or replace the face-to-face experience we enjoy in our normal daily routine. We will start with the tools we already have in place and that we know students can easily access. Please be assured that student privacy will be maintained with all types of communication.
We are anticipating more guidance from Tennessee Department of Education related to high school course credits, high school graduation requirements, and equitable access for all students. Our principals will communicate changes and updates as we navigate this fluid situation.
Teachers will be creating content during the designated period of April 1-3. Extended learning opportunities for students will begin on April 6. Look for additional communication from principals next week. I feel confident that the learning opportunities for teachers and students will lead to better resources and stronger instructional practices when we are able to return to classrooms. Please prioritize your health and care for your family during this time.
Sincerely,
Dr. Bruce Borchers
Superintendent

WORK ETHIC DIPLOMA DISTINCTION DEADLINE EXTENDED - APRIL 15TH
Many seniors have submitted their paperwork for this distinction, and we are soooo proud of them. This deadline is extended to APRIL 15TH due to the uncertainty of our school year. We encourage ALL seniors to download the PDF below and work through the challenges to earn this distinction.
The Oak Ridge Schools Board of Education has approved the attainment of a Work Ethic Distinction for the first time this year for our 2020 graduates. What it entails is students providing a certificate to potential employers that they have been demonstrating desirable work skills.
How do they earn this certificate?
Students are to attain 20 points from the attached list. When they provide evidence of success on these measures, they will be awarded a Work Ethic Distinction Certificate (also attached) that will serve as part of the student’s job application portfolio.
Logos of employers who have already indicated they are willing to grant preference in interviewing a student who presents a Work Ethic Distinction Certificate are included on the face of the certificate. The list of employers who want to join this effort is growing. An ongoing list of such partner employers will be kept at our local chambers of commerce.

FOOD CITY SCHOOL BUCKS PROGRAM!
It’s time for Food City’s School Bucks Program that helps support ORHS-CDC! The program begins Wednesday, September 4, 2019 and ends on May 5, 2020.
Parents can use this to easily link their ValuCard to their school of choice at checkout.
• At the cash register, have the cashier scan the barcode along with your Food City ValuCard. This will automatically link the two together, which means you only need to scan this barcode one time. The PLU listed below may also be entered at the cash register by the cashier in lieu of scanning barcode.
• Parents also can register their ValuCard online by visiting www.foodcity.com/schoolbucks
From that point, it’s simple… just shop and earn valuable points for your school. Remember this is a ValuCard program… use your ValuCard and save for ORHS-CDC. Nothing has to be done again until next school year!
*Please share the barcode information with family and friends! You can only register your ValuCard with one school/program so please make it ORHS-CDC! Thank you in advance for your support!
