Up and Running

This week we saw it all at Fletcher Elementary. Monday, we had to call an audible and pivot to a modified rainy day lunch plan because the marine layer was so thick. Our Running Club athletes crossed the 200 mile mark. Wednesday, our UTK-2nd grader staff collaborated on best practices for Fountas & Pinnell reading assessments while the 3rd-5th grade team looked at their FAST reading scores. Thursday was our first Fire Safety Drill of the year, and our students/staff rocked it with flying colors! It was a really proud moment for our school and showed what we're capable of when we work together.

Next week we are up and running! Art Reach starts on Monday and our 1st/2nd graders start their morning Running Club too. If you have a student in Mrs. Duncan or Mrs. Logan's class and drop your student off after 7:50, please pull into the cul de sac and have your student walk up to the blacktop through the main school entrance. Wednesday is National Walk to School Day. In years past, parents would park on Finch and walk with their students the final couple blocks leading to school. More information will be released soon. Wednesday is also our first Java with Jeff (coffee with the Principal) of the year. Join us at 5PM to learn more about how our Title I funding is being used to support our students and stick around for a Q&A session afterwards.

Celebrating Latinx Heritage Month

Latinx Heritage month is September 15 - October 15. Each week, we'll be featuring a different resource for teachers and families to access for a greater understanding of the Latinx experience and cultural history in the United States. This week check out the Library of Congress page dedicated to celebrating this month. There are links to tons of beautiful images from our country's largest archive of literature and art.

Art Reach Starts MONDAY

Art Reach is back at Fletcher with weekly lessons taught by a professional artist starting October 4th. Mrs. Yasmine Kasem will begin weekly lessons with each class that focus on the essential elements of artwork: color, line, shape, form, and texture. These foundational skills will prepare our students for the spring when we create our school mural.

Fire Safety Drill Overview

WOW! Our first Fire Safety Drill of the year set the bar really high. Our students were quiet, calm, and responsible yesterday. We evacuated all classrooms to the blacktop in approximately six minutes. The drill was completed in under nine minutes! Thank you to our staff who expertly prepared our students for this important procedure and our families who reinforced the seriousness of the drill. The Great California Shake-out is on October 21st. Fletcher staff and students will practice our first duck-and-cover drill with students all over the state. More info to come in future issues of the Falcon Flyer.
