The Royal Plaza Hotel came crashing down On August, 13th, 1993 at around 10:00 AM in Nakhon, Ratchasima, Thailand.
FAIL FACT!!
137 people were killed and over 227 people were injured!!!
On August 15 a pregnant woman was pulled from the mangled pile of steel and debris.
WHY IT FAILED?
Police detained the owner of the hotel. The architect and an engineer over allegations that three stories had been added to the building in 1990 without proper architectural review. Also, a huge amount of water was being stored on the roof of the royal plaza hotel ahead of an expected water shortage.
FAIL FACT!!
The building came crashing down in less than 10 seconds
- that's 1.6 seconds per floor!!!

The tragedy also claimed the life of U.S. Air Force sergeant Ramon Canda, who was in town installing telephone lines at the Korat Royal Thai Air Force Base.
THE COST OF THE FAILURE!!
In 2009, 5 people were charged for the failure of the structure. They were fined 152.23 million baht, which is like dollars, to go to the companies and victims' families. The five people included the Royal Plaza hotel owner, Amorn Janrattanaprada, Wongsinthai Limited Partnership, the engineer Sathorn Promnin and design and construction supervising engineer Bampen Panratissara.
