Senior Seminar

Seniors started their seminar class on August 23. Last week they learned about post secondary planning, transcripts, and setting up their individual meetings with their counselor. The senior interview will be a time for the counselors to discuss grades, make sure the student is on track for graduation, and provide post secondary planning. Students need to have this meeting before any transcripts will be sent out.

This week they are learning about writing essays for college admissions as well as registering for the October ACT if they are interested.

Freshman Seminar

Freshman started their seminar class on August 17th. Students will be learning about social emotional health, their individual strengths, academics and mindfulness.

Coffee With Counselors

We will have 4 Coffee With Counselors Events throughout this school year. These events will be for all students and parents to get to know the counselors a little more. This first event we will be discussing Success Strategies for students throughout their high school career at WHS.

The other dates for Coffee With Counselors will be November 20, February 5, and April 23.

Each event will start in the Warrior Room with Coffee and a light breakfast. We will then move into the Little Theatre for discussion.

Ways to stay connected to the WHS Counseling Department

Role of a School Counselor

Counselors provide social, emotional, and academic support for students. Through solution focused counseling we work with students to help them problem solve and come up with solutions to cope in many different situations. We are not licensed to provide therapy, so when a student needs more support than what we can provide, we refer them to the appropriate resource.

Part of our academic support is working with students to find a career they might be interested in. Once we know a career field a student is interested in, we can work to see what classes would best match their career interest.

Post Secondary planning is a major part of what counselors do also. Each student will sign up to meet with their counselor individually to discuss their post secondary plans. Many times this will be college, and the counselor will help them with the planning time lines, and possible options for where they might want to attend.
