FROM THE HUGHSTON CLINIC
Greetings from the Hughston Clinic! As we begin the month of February, we also begin to see an increase in the number of flu cases seen in the school setting. In response, each morning Mrs. Thompson and I work closely together to find out as much as we can about each student that has been reported absent for the day. It helps greatly when we have the following information:
-what type flu/A or B
-symptoms of the illness
-fever present or not
While reviewing the ChildSafe Line, we are able to identify the grade levels and specific classrooms with the greatest number of students with similar illnesses. Each day, after students leave for the day, we target the affected classrooms for deep and thorough cleanings. However, even after thorough and complete cleanings, we still have to remain vigilant and promote other ways of prevention including:
-washing hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds
-covering coughs and sneezes with a tissue or an elbow
-stay home when sick
-avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth throughout the day
It is also important to note that the single, best way to prevent the flu is to get vaccinated each and every year. The flu vaccination may not be 100% effective each year, but it will shorten the duration and severity for vaccinated individuals.
According to the CDC, the symptoms of the flu include the following:
-fever -fatigue
-cough -chills
-sore throat -headache
-runny or stuffy nose -body aches
*everyone with the flu WILL have a fever
In addition, you may be able to pass on the flu to someone else, before you even know you are sick. People with the flu are most contagious in the first 3-4 days, after their illness begins.
Finally, please know that here at Hughston Elementary we have the important goal of keeping our students safe and healthy. Every effort is made, on a daily basis, to identify patterns of illness in the school, and act accordingly, to reduce the spread of the flu and other common illnesses. As always, if you should have any questions or concerns please don’t hesitate to call, email, or come by the school clinic. I am happy to assist in any way possible. Together, at home and in school, we can work together to reinforce healthy habits and help reduce the spread of illness.
Respectfully,
Jen Cummings, BSN, RN
