Week at a Glance
Marian Central Catholic High School Faculty Newsletter
November 17, 2018
Another week in the books for this school year. The week kept us busy through teaching, meetings, recognition, and hopes of bringing in new students for the next school year.
As the year moves on, Mrs. Loy and Ms. Novy will be continuing our evaluations and walk throughs. We are always excited to get into your rooms and engage with the students, so thank you ahead of time for opening your classrooms and lessons to us!
Our Academic Breakfast was a wonderful celebration of students! Not only did we recognize academic achievements, but also for the first time, we recognized those students who live out the Marian Central Catholic mission every day. The new Discipleship award was very special and the students and families seemed very pleased!
This week was also filled with several retreat opportunities for our students. A big thanks to all the teachers who organized and chaperoned, providing them an opportunity to develop a more intimate relationship with our students.
The week ended with a wonderfully collaborative spirit, combining efforts of our Staffulty and students to ensure that our visiting 8th grade students had an amazing experience at Marian. As the students were filing out and back on their buses, there were lots of smiles, comments and many respectful, high energy "thank yous" giving us confidence that we touched a few young lives this Friday! Thank you, also, to the math department for hosting this year's articulation meeting with the Deanery schools. Working closely with the Deanery schools will ensure that there is a more seamless transition from 8th grade to high school.
The collaboration didn't stop, as together our Staffulty had an amazing conversation, focusing on how to protect and/or increase instructional time and develop a schedule and procedures that would allow us to meet the needs of all Marian students. As we wrapped up our conversation Friday afternoon, it sounded like we collectively agreed that we needed to put out a little questionnaire addressing some of the topics that came up. First, please click here for a review of the information shared by Ms. Novy and the SIP Team. A couple of slides were added (red print) that provide some comments from the discussion. After reviewing the slides, please share your ideas on this survey.
We also had a good discussion on whether we should keep our 4 quarter/year schedule, keeping quarter exams, or move to a 2 semester/year schedule, eliminating quarter exams. Through a strong show of hands, it seems we are all in agreement that Marian stay the course this year, but work on transitioning our calendar to a 2 semester year beginning 2019-20.
Thank you for making our group discussion very productive.
Looking ahead...
Tomorrow (Sunday, November 18, 2018 from 1 - 3 pm) is our annual Open House. We ask that all Staffulty be at Marian, prepared and in their places and ready no later than 12:45 pm. The building will be open as early as 10:00 am for your convenience. Thank you ahead of time for making this event successful. Without you, there is no Marian!
The rest of this week will go relatively quickly as we all prepare for Thanksgiving.
Based on the current calendar, this Monday is the midterm point for quarter 2. This means that we are 4 weeks into the quarter... gradebooks should have at least 8 formative assignments (many teachers' gradebooks have many more already!). By the end of any quarter, we also need to make sure there are at least 3 summatives... providing students will ample opportunity to show what they know.
Tuesday will be filled with excitement as our students show their best school spirit in support of Hurricane Day! Thank you for supporting our students in their spirit, and our school through promoting this special day! Keep Marian in your prayers in hopes that donations are collected to support all facets of our school.
Finally, Wednesday is a noon dismissal... as well as a special Thanksgiving Mass day. Please see the link on the calendar below for the special bell schedule for this day. Student Council members will also be popping into all first period classes to promote their annual Christmas Drive, where each first period class "adopts" a family and does what they can to ensure that they have a blessed Christmas. Thank you for supporting and promoting this cause.
From administration and our families, to all of you, we wish you a most blessed Thanksgiving holiday weekend. May it be filled with family, love, and joy.
Have a wonderful week!
