MLK Day
Greetings,
I hope this communication finds everyone well. As we embark on the Martin Luther King Holiday, I encourage everyone to consider his vision of equality, education, and service. I have attached a flyer from the City of Summit with all the events that will take place between Saturday, January 13th and Monday, January 15th, to celebrate the legacy of Martin Luther King. Any student in 8th grade who attends these events will be given community service credit. Have the event organizer sign your son or daughter's community service form for them to obtain credit. Advisory
Each new year begins with new beginnings and people making new year's resolutions. At LCJSMS we continue to challenge our students to be the best they can be, both in the classroom and in the community. Next week our school community will be participating in NO NAME CALLING WEEK . Our Advisory lessons this week kick off this message of being the best you that you can be. Our sixth graders had a lesson called Digital Citizenship - Play to Your Core. Student’s focused on what it means to leave a digital footprint and the impact of words, especially as it relates to social media. Student’s discussed ways in which to use your voice for good. In seventh grade, our students focused on kicking off the year on the right foot and ‘taking care of yourself’. As we approach the end of quarter 2 and the half way mark for the year, they discussed ways to manage stress. Through examples and discussions students explored ways in which stress impacts them and ways to manage the stress. Students were given the opportunity to explore a relaxation room for tools and strategies. We encourage everyone to utilize the Summit Relaxation Room as a resource. The eighth graders had a lesson on respecting differences and learning tolerance entitled “What Makes Us Who We Are?” Students were challenged to think about what identity characteristics (social and personal) strangers would attribute to them if they saw them in public. After watching a video students discovered that not all characteristics are visible and that some are perceived and not true. Students were encouraged to remember to accept and appreciate each and everyone’s uniqueness.
