Canby High School Family Newsletter

For the Week of November 18th to December 1st, 2021

Big picture

Principal's Message

Good afternoon Canby High School Students and Families!

This is the last week of classes for the term, and we hope students are both academically and mentally prepared for finals. We hope all goes well and our students are successful in the first set of exams for the year.

Yesterday, CHS conducted a successful “Lock Down” drill. On cue, our buildings and classrooms were secured and students sheltered in place. Shortly thereafter, everyone evacuated the school. Despite our lack of practice, students took the activity seriously and responded well to direction. Canby Police and Fire assisted and were impressed by the actions. (Thank you CPD and CFD!)

Today, many of our seniors participated in the “Economic Summit.” This is an academic activity, where students research countries and conduct international relations collectively in a multi-class simulation. In speaking with several participating staff members, we were in agreement that this year, our seniors prepared and performed better than we’ve ever seen. Great job to all those who participated!

While most sports are transitioning into the Winter season, our Trap Team continues to compete and excel! The team recently won 1st place in our conference! Brandon Slater was the top male for our conference with a 24.1 average for the season and finished in 2nd place in the State! Hollie Lopez finished 8th in the state for females with a 21.8 average for the season and

Rylie Sullivan finished 10th in the state for females with a 21.2 average for the season. Congratulations Brandon, Hollie, and Rylie!

Finally, next week is Thanksgiving, and we’ll take a break from writing our weekly newsletter. At CHS we’re thankful for the support of our students and community during these challenging times. We hope you and your families have a wonderful holiday!

Stay healthy and strong, Canby! Go Cougars!

SafeOregon is a 24-hour anonymous tip-line individuals can use if they see or hear about instances of bullying, violence, threats, drug use, suicidal thoughts and more. The goal is to keep students safe by preventing threats from coming to fruition.

There are a number of ways to report, including:

  • Texting or calling 844-4-SAFE-OR (844-472-3367)

  • Emailing tip@safeoregon.com

  • Online at safeoregon.com

  • Via the SafeOregon app

Please help us keep Canby’s kids safe by utilizing this program.

Join Us-Employment in Canby Schools

While parent volunteering continues to be on hold until further notice, we do have employment opportunities in our schools for part-time positions like instructional assistants, nutrition services, custodians and more. We are also seeking on-call substitutes for those positions, which would provide even greater flexibility. Visit our employment website to view all current opportunities.

Upcoming Parent Input Opportunities

We are still collecting names of interested parents who want to serve on committees that provide planning input for the future CHS bond construction projects. Our partners in this process, Mahlum Architects, will soon be looking for more community input through focus groups. If you are interested, please respond by completing this form.

CHS Video Broadcast Recruitment

Parents and students, do you have an interest in live streaming and announcing events? Would you like to help CHS and the community? Do you want to be a part of our Cougar team?

We are hoping to create a live stream broadcast network of volunteers to cover CHS sports and activities in a professional manner in keeping with the hard work that our students and athletes put in. Our vision is to develop a dynamic partnership with CTV-5 to support these broadcasts with interested students and adults providing the camera work, production, and commentary. If you have an interest in participating with this after school club, please contact Tyler Francke with The Canby Current and Now Hear This Studios at francke@canbyfirst.com. Please include your contact information and any prior media experience.

Attendance and Sick Students

To ensure the accuracy and efficiency of our attendance process, please remember the following guidelines:

  • To report an absence, call our attendance line at 503-263-7210 or email chs-attendance@canby.k12.or.us.

  • Please report an absence as soon as possible and no later than 48 hours after the absence.

  • If your student needs to leave class for an appointment, inform the attendance office as soon as possible. This will help us ensure that your student receives a note to leave class in a timely manner.

Remember that attendance matters and students who attend class regularly are more likely to stay on track, graduate on time, learn deeply, and get the most from their high school experience. Please partner with us to ensure great attendance and to remove any attendance barriers.

Bus Transportation

  • If you have any questions or problems with school bus transportation, please email Student Transport of America (STA) at canbyschoolbus@ridesta.com.
