FHS Students Extract DNA
Students in Mrs. Wilkins's Honors Biology class designed their own DNA extraction labs after careful research and development of procedures and materials. DNA was extracted from a multitude of organisms including carrots, beets, blueberries and kiwis!! DNA extraction is a first step in genetic engineering and forensic investigations. There is no telling what these talented biology students will discover next!

Music Festival a Huge Hit
March 1st marked the FHS Instrumental Music Program's annual BBQ Fundraiser and Pre-Festival Concert. Over 500 BBQ meals were served and students played music for the upcoming District Festival at Beckman HS. We were also very fortunate to have the Columbus Tustin MS Director Melody Drumm bring her Advanced Orchestra Students to join the FHS String Orchestra. Outstanding turnout, food, and music!
Mr. Wager's functional skills class can often be seen walking out in our wonderful city during the school day. A good Community Based Instruction program is essential to any functional skills class. On Thursday mornings, Mr. Wager's students get a chance to use some of the skills they work on in class at three different job-sites: Don Jose's Mexican Cafe, Crunch Fitness, and Round Table Pizza. The students work hard for about an hour at these outstanding Tustin businesses wiping and setting tables, cleaning exercise equipment, restocking shelves, and building pizza boxes. Students even get the opportunity to earn a paycheck through TUSD's Workability program. This extremely valuable weekly experience gives these Knights the opportunity to practice essential skills like using public transportation, following directions at work, safely navigating the community on foot, and buying lunch out in the community. Next time you see them, say hello!
Young Man of the Month!
February's Young Man of The Month, Brian Tagle, is accompanied by his parents Dr. Bruce Tagle and Dr. Susan Stalzer. Brian is one of Foothill’s finest in the classroom and in the community. We are very proud to have Brian Tagle as FHS Young Man of The Month. Congratulations Brian!
Athletes of Character
On Monday night, 50 schools, 97 honorees, and over 400 people attended the Athletes of Character Ceremony. The wonderful dinner with the many families included a Celebration of the Athletes, but more importantly their Fantastic Character on and off the field. Rob Wigod (CIFSS Commissioner) and Roger Blake (CIF State Executive Director) honored the guests and recognized these outstanding Athletes of Character. Congrats to Brandon Khamenian and Jesse Haigh - You Represent the Code of the Knight!
FHS Students Participate in Annual Write Off Competition
Thirteen intrepid Journalism students from Foothill traveled to Fullerton College on February 25th to compete in the 2017 OCJEA (Orange County Journalism Education Association) Annual Write-Off Competition. Students competed against more than 200 other contestants in a variety of categories, including News, Editorial, Editorial Cartoon, Photography, and Layout. Journalism advisor Joanne McDermott created and delivered the fictional News Conference for this year’s competition.
This was the seventh year in a row that Knightlife staff members have competed in the Write-Off, pitting their journalistic skills against students from more than a dozen leading schools, such as Sunny Hills, Northwood, and Troy. This year, Foothill students earned awards in the News, Editorial, Editorial Cartoon, and Layout categories. All entries are judged by professors and journalists who volunteer their time to support this scholastic event. “It’s really exciting to participate in an event like this,” said sophomore Whitney Mutz. “I can’t wait to go back next year.”
