End of Grading Period
Q2/Semester 1 ends on January 20. Report cards will be emailed out on the January 27. We encourage you to take a look at PowerSchool and see if there is anything your student may want to discuss with their teacher(s) before grades are finalized for the semester. We suggest using the desktop version of PowerSchool for a more detailed view. Here are a few resources:

Counselors Corner
February 6-10 is National School Counseling Week. We are proud to have a strong K-12 Counseling Program in Superior Schools. We have 16 professionally trained and licensed school counselors throughout the district. Each one works hard to support kids from PreK through High School.
Counselors are here to support all our students.
Please reach out to:
Amy Warring - 6th Grade
Claire Illies - 7th Grade
Maryann Bonneville - 8th Grade
We are busy with 8th grade students, preparing them for the transition to high school. Reach out to Maryann Bonneville, 8th grade counselor, with any questions. Here are some of the things we are doing:
Continuing work on their Academic and Career Plan (ACP). This work is done in a program called XELLO. All students in the state of Wisconsin are required to have an ACP, starting in 6th grade. This plan becomes part of their graduation requirement. We work on it every year and spend time exploring interests, personality, and learning style and how they connect to future life and career. Please ask your child about what they are learning about themselves as we engage in this work.
- High School counselors from SHS will visit 8th graders Tuesday, January 24. We will talk about the high school experience, the 4 Year Plan, the course schedule, and what options are available to them at SHS. This is a great opportunity for our students to ask questions. They will bring home a REGISTRATION CARD that must be completed and signed by a parent. Please spend some time going over that with them.
Students will register for their 9th grade classes in mid-February.
- In April (date TBD) SHS will host an Open House for incoming 9th grade students. This will be an evening event. We encourage families to attend and ask lots of questions!
Check & Connect
Check and Connect Mentors are individuals whose role is a cross between a monitor, advocate, case manager, and coach. They are relationship based and provide the student with motivation while fostering the development of life skills needed to overcome obstacles. The primary goal is to keep students connected at school and with learning. Superior Middle School is happy to have three Check and Connect Mentors in our building:
Mr. Robbins is the 8th Grade Check and Connect mentor. He is retired from the Marine Corps after 22 years of service. Prior to his arrival at SMS, he spent 12 years working at a residential treatment facility for at risk youth. He believes that all students can be successful, despite their life circumstances, if given the support and opportunity.
Mr. Krivinchuk works with 7th Grade students. He is in his second year as a Check and Connect Mentor at SMS. Previously, Mr. Krivinchuk worked in the juvenile justice field, working at a residential treatment facility for at-risk youth. He has been a coach or advisor in the Superior School District also. He believes in providing opportunities for youth.
Ms. Kulas is the 6th grade Check and Connect mentor. She graduated from UWS in 2021 and has been involved with the Superior School District for the last few years. She has spent most of her undergraduate career working with students in many different age groups. This is her first year working at SMS. Ms. Kulas believes that students need to feel safe and feel heard in order to be successful.
