SMS Has Christmas Spirit!!
Another great show by SMS students—the bands and choirs displayed amazing talent and definitely got us in the Christmas spirit!
The decorations created by the students and displayed around the gym added to the festive spirit. Thanks to the Art classes and Mrs. Loewen for their decorations! We love to showcase all the Arts in our school—creative art as well as music and band!
Two homerooms went to Southeast Helping Hands to help pack Christmas hampers. What a wonderful experience for them to see the process of how to fill hampers, what goes in to the hampers, and to be aware that there are families in need in our own community. Our community is fortunate to have so many helping hands, and we were excited to have been able to be a few of them!

Camp Cedarwood is Soon Here!!
The Grade 8 students will be heading out to Camp Cedarwood for 3 days of fun, fellowship and outdoor education. This is always the highlight event for SMS students where they create memories that last a lifetime!

Fees due: January 20
If you would be interested in volunteering to go along to Cedarwood (we especially need female chaperones!), please contact the school.
Happy Retirement Mr. Dueck!
I Would Like to Conduct the WSO Because"
Congratulations to Claire Heide, this year’s winner of the Steinbach Arts Council's "I want to conduct the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra because..." contest. The contest ran through November and gave students in grade 5 and 6 from Southeastern Manitoba the opportunity to explain why they wanted to conduct the Symphony. As winner of the contest, Claire was the guest conductor at the WSO's Christmas Pops Concert at the Steinbach Mennonite Church in Steinbach, where she single-handedly conducted the Symphony.
Way to go Claire! SMS is proud to call you one of our own!
And, coincidentally, this is the second year in a row that we have had a student win this contest!
Keeping our Students Safe
Please remember to slow down when passing SMS on Lumber Avenue during the school day (speed zone of 30 kms/hr).
Please drop your child off on the south side of Lumber. Students running across the street and drivers stopping traffic increases the risk of accidents and injuries.
Encourage your child to use the cross walk when crossing Lumber Avenue, and to make use of our crossing guards when crossing Brandt Street.
Remember to wear warm outer clothing to school so that you can enjoy some outdoor recess time at lunch! It’s great to get a little fresh air during the day!
Regarding Inclement Weather Closures
In the event that schools are closed due to inclement weather or hazardous driving conditions, announcements will be made on CHSM (AM1250), MIX 96.7, and CJOB (AM680) as well as steinbachonline.com. Hanover School Division will also phone home by 7:00 a.m. If you do not want to receive these early morning phone calls, please contact the school office and we can request to have your name removed from the calling list.
Regarding Cold Weather Closures
Schools will be closed when the temperature reaches –35 degrees COMBINED with a windchill of –45 degrees.
Tuesday - tacos, $2
Wednesday - pizza, $2/slice
Thursday - chicken fingers, $3
The canteen is open every day from 12:20-12:30. Students can purchase canned drinks (juice), Gatorade and frozen yogurt.
PLEASE TAKE NOTE
We have a lot of students that come to the office asking for cutlery for their lunches. We only have enough spoons to give to those students who purchase frozen yogurt from our canteen. Please make sure that if your child needs a spoon or fork for his lunch, that you include it in their lunch bag. Thanks so much!
