Monday Morning Bearcub Brief

Volume CXX--2 December 2019

"Every CUB stepping up, reaching out, moving forward!"

Kleb Kudos

Welcome back, Bearcub family! I hope that everyone had a relaxing break full of fun and family. I know I am coming back recharged and ready to see our kids and make the push for the next three weeks to the end of the semester. While I know it's easy to get lost in the hustle and bustle of the holiday season (and quite frankly, all of the holiday shopping I have yet to do...) let's remember that we only have fifteen instructional days left in 2019 in which we can grow our Bearcubs. But before we push forward, lets reflect on some of the great things that have already been happening:
Congratulations to all of our grade level spelling bee winners. On November 28th, our class level spelling bee winners competed in the grade level spelling bee rounds to determine which final three students from each grade would participate on Thursday in the campus level spelling bee. Our forever learners did an outstanding job supporting one another throughout the competition and we could not be more proud of our scholars. Great job everyone!
Big picture
The week before Thanksgiving break students and teachers participated in Kleb's second round of Passion Projects. Our Cubs were able to problem solve, use creativity, collaborate with others, and learn about taking care of themselves both mentally and physically. Our third round of Passion Projects will begin on January 28. If your Bearcub has a passion for something that they don't learn about in a typical school day, encourage them to talk with a staff member! We are always looking for Passion Projects that students would love to participate in.
Congratulations to these Bearcub winners. Their names were drawn from CUB cards and they received Uber Eats with a friend from a restaurant of their choice. CUB cards are handed out to students from all staff on campus for displaying our chore values, Continuous Learner, Understanding Citizen, and Building Responsibility. Once students receive 10 CUB cards they can turn them in for a band. In December we will hosting a cookies and milk party for a specific color band, draw names for gift cards, and will be popping by Dens with our snack cart. You can learn more about our chores values and CUB matrix below.

Huggins Highlights

Teachers, don't forget, today (Monday, 12/2) is our site visit for the Personalized Learning Cohort 1 committee! Being selected for the first cohort would mean lots of quality training on PL from EdElements that will help us with our personalized learning focus in the 20-21 school year.

Remember that the third cycle of our FLE challenge needs to be completed by the end of the semester! Make sure to let the PL team know when you are trying your second personalized learning lesson using kleb.info/TryFLE (this is the same form as before).

Also, as you plan for these next three weeks, teachers please be mindful of the campus happenings. Friday, 12/13 will be the music department's annual Elementary Holiday Tours, so be mindful that many students in band, choir and orchestra will be out that day. Also, check the finals schedule below if you teach students with high school credit courses.

Parents, I put this in the last brief, but I know you have slept since then...I have had several staff members ask that I remind you to please not text your students during class. Please remember that according to the student code of conduct and the Kleb Acceptable Mobile Use policy you signed at the beginning of the year, if a teacher has indicated that phones are to be away during class, they will be confiscated and you will have to pick them up in the front office. Help us to remind your Bearcubs that phones are only to be used during non-instructional times during the day. Thanks for your help!

We are still looking for WATCH D.O.G.S.!® This is an innovative program focusing on education and safety in schools by using the positive influence of fathers and father-figures for a two-fold purpose:

1. To provide positive male role models for the students, demonstrating by their presence that education is important.

2. To provide extra sets of eyes and ears to enhance school security and reduce bullying.

Fathers, stepfathers, grandfathers, male guardians and uncles are asked to spend at least one day at their student’s school volunteering. They will support the school through:

monitoring the school property, working one-on-one or in small groups, reading, helping with work, listening ears, or whatever else needs to be done to PLANT SEEDS OF SUCCESS in the lives of the students.

Parent Reminder--Dismissal Procedures

Car Riders

Car rider parents will turn on Lyons School Road from either Louetta Road or Stuebner-Airline. Parents will enter at the north entrance to the Klein High School student parking lot. Look for the sign. Parents will then form two lanes along the curb, up until the sign indicating the stopping point. When your student arrives, a staff member will direct you to exit past the band and to the right so that you can exit through the south exit of the parking lot. If your student will not be immediately ready to be picked up after school, parents will need to park in one of the parking spots to wait for their child. If you do park in a parking spot to wait for your child, use extreme caution when backing out of the parking space. Students have been instructed to cross to the Klein High parking lot at the cross walk with an employee. See the image below for an aerial view.

As a reminder, there is no afternoon pickup at the front of the school due to the potential safety issue as traffic backs up onto Louetta. Thank you again for understanding our need to keep our Bearcubs safe.

Bus Riders

Students who ride the bus are to wait in the cafeteria at the designated table for their bus number. Once a bus number is called, the bus number will be posted on the wall next to the cafeteria exit door. All students should check the posted bus numbers before exiting into the bus parking lot.

The first round of buses will be dismissed promptly at 4:25 after a last call for those buses has been made in the cafeteria. Once the first bus begins to roll, for student safety, no student will be allowed to enter the bus lot or get on a bus. After the first bus has started to depart, there is no way to communicate with the driver and it is unsafe for students to be in the bus lot. After the first round of buses has been dismissed, the second round of buses will be called as they arrive and will depart as soon as they have been loaded.

Walkers

Students who walk must immediately leave the building unless attending tutorials or are otherwise under the care of a supervising teacher. The cafeteria is reserved for bus riders only. Once students have exited the building, they are expected to make their way home directly and there is no reentry into the building.

Attendance Counts

Did you know you can now report an absence in Skyward? Click HERE for more information.

Any student who is absent for the whole day is required to produce one of the following within 5 days of their absence(s):

  • Parent Note
  • Parent email (within 5 days of absence)
  • Original medical note (copies or altered notes will not be accepted)
  • Faxed notes must be sent from physician’s office
  • Court note
  • Official note for observance of approved religious holy days

***If a student is absent for part of the day for a doctor appointment, their absence will be coded as Section 25 (temporary absence) if the student follows the following procedure: The student must return the doctor excuse to the Attendance Office immediately upon returning to school to receive the Section 25 coding for their absence.

If a student does not produce one of the items listed above within the allotted timeframe, that absence will be considered unexcused and counted toward their total semester absences.

Klein ISD takes attendance very seriously, and we want to see your child succeed at Kleb. If you have any questions regarding attendance, please feel free to contact the attendance office or your assistant principal.
